The Phrase "Jump the shark"

It means when the show lost its magic. It comes from when on Happy Days the fonz jumped a shark pool on his bike. Its when a show starts to pull stunts to get people to watch

Or like when on the sitcom 'Rhoda'. When she married Joe, at that point it jumped the shark.

Wikipedia and google are your friend.

He was water-skiing, not on a bike. I don't know what a "shark pool" is but he was jumping a shark which was in the ocean.

It was very important that I cleared that up.

Oh sorry.
I just read about it. I knew it came from Happy Days. But its way before my time.(!)

i'm glad you did because if you hadn't, i would have had to.

i think Fonz jumping over a shark while skiing is pretty awesome though.

OI!

I'm 24! 4 years younger than you. Age is no excuse for pop culture ignorance. A better excuse would be having a life ;)

Oh mary so true. However will I live knowing I screwed up abot Le Fonz and Happy Days? Oh the shame, lol.:-({|=

The worst part about a once credible show "jumping the shark," is that you can never take it seriously again. It's as though it "went off the rails." It's a sure sign a show's days are numbered.

Its a bit of an over-used phrase these days, to be honest.

Plus, a show can "jump the shark" and then get its mojo back. 'Frasier' is a classic example.

The website devoted to it is ludicrous as people have shows listing as jumping the shark from the 1st episode, which contradicts the whole concept.

that is true, because in order for a show to jump the shark it had to be somewhat good in the first place, I guess you could pre jump the shark if ur show sucks from day one though

Its as if you had watched Fridays episode of Bill Marh (sp) on HBO when he interviewed Ron Howard and they talked about this very thing.

You already knew what it was before you asked this. Ron even talked about this very episode. He said it got huge ratings and the show went on for another 3 years.

Caught you in another error (20 lashes with a wet noodle!): The show Rhoda started with the marriage to Joe. That was the opening episode. Therefore, jumping the shark doesn't apply to Rhoda, at least when it comes to the wedding.
