In fairness, a double negative wasn't necessariliy a positive in English.

Shakespeared used them, and it was understood to be a compounded negative.

Shakespeare wrote before the change, which was apparently introduced because early grammarians tried to force English to fit Latin grammar.

It figureres. I'd wager that is also the origin of the injunction against ending a sentence with a preposition.

Grammar for clarity is a virtue. Grammar as a marker of classical and elitist education is obnoxious.
