^^ Oh, this reminds me of August of 2001. The month before 9/11 was an especially silly season in the news media.
The big story that month was of Lizzie Grubman (
link to story here), a high-powered publicist and the daughter of a
very high-powered entertainment lawyer. She was at a favorite restaurant/nightclub out in the Hamptons (for those who don't know, the very wealthy series of beach towns at the very end of Long Island in New York). She parked her big-ass SUV in the fire lane and just would not move it; every time someone from the restaurant came to ask her to park somewhere, anywhere else, she responded, "Fuck you, white trash. Get someone with more authority." Finally the boss came out and told her to move; she said, "Fine!", threw the SUV into reverse, and backed right into a huge crowd waiting to get into the club. 16 people were hurt, though no one was killed.
This was the Schadenfreude scandal of the summer. About a day later, someone put online a simple game called "Lizzie's Hamptons 500."
There's an archived version of it here, if you'd like to play. Unfortunately, the title text is missing from the archived version; it went like this:
LIZZIE TAKES OUT THE TRASH!
Help Lizzie Grubman rid the Hamptons of white trash by using your left and right arrow keys to move the SUV.
Every time you hit someone in line, he/she disappears in a splash of blood as Lizzie says something (e.g., "Oh, my brake!") and takes a swig from a Corona.
Fuss over this incident went on for about three weeks and culminated in The New York Post running a "
Win a Lizziemobile!" contest.
