Agreed.
In the last 20 years, restaurants even began exploiting hard surfacing in the dining area to increase the din, creating a supposedly more exciting atmosphere of noise.
They did it so well they drove out some older customers, not accidental, as they noise atmosphere was supposed to be a youth angle. Crap chains like Applebees began blaring music over which one could not even hear conversation with the same table.
