The "Right" to be Fat

For sure.

It wouldn't hurt, though, to list the number of calories on the cups -- and the amount of fat that translates to. I imagine if someone was looking at that information every day, pretty soon the idea of such a giant soda would start to seem disgusting.

maybe really sharp adults - but they're not buying 48 oz drinks

kids wouldn't care - especially the ones with less intelligence or access to information about obesity, etc.

the reality is that this law is about helping less fortunate kids who are not "getting it"

I actually don't mind if the nutritional information is posted on foods and drinks. For me it's a big help. I have never been a diabetic, but due to intestinal surgery 5 1/2 years ago, I have to watch my sugar intake. Plus, I like to consume high protein items. Having the info on the items helps.

Now if they can just print it in large font, I'd be happy! :D

i stopped getting an occasional muffin at starbucks the moment i saw it was 500 calories - it's not THAT good

that was Bloomberg's push btw

I will be gladly watching the world collapse when the government does that. I wouldn't be surprised if all the corporations that supply us with food just shut down and not care about the impacts, actually I'd be happy if they did.

the "superior" acting guy is the one who thinks he can pontificate with certainty about a city and a mayor that he knows nothing about

have you been to nyc ?

it's awesome

crime is down - public services are good - it's clean

it's a great place to live

kudos to the mayor

come sometime and you will see

NYC, eh? Let's see...

Federal income tax rates of up to 35%. Check.
State income tax rate of 6.45% to 8.82%. Check.
CITY income tax rate of 2.9% to 3.6%. Check.

City income tax? Good God!

If you want to live in NYC, fine; but be prepared to do so only if you're relatively wealthy, in the least.

Why anyone would willingly work his ass off to give more than half his earnings to the government is beyond me.

So then you don't have to pay any taxes at all. Cool.

Of course I know how the tax laws work, and it doesn't matter. NYC residents still are paying through their noses in taxes, which is one big reason why people are fleeing in droves.

CollegeUmpire, perhaps you don't understand how the tax laws work.

You can write off what you give each government. For example, if you live in NYC, you can write off the city and state income taxes you paid to NYC, when you file your federal tax return.

So you don't actually have to pay the full 50%. Even if you're Donald Trump.

But those are deductions, not credits, right?

So you do end up paying most of it.

Then there's the sales tax rate, which combined is pushing 9%.

And a mayor who makes the trains run on time -- but thinks the law doesn't apply to him.

At least THEIR sales tax isn't as high as ours, specifically C(r)ook County's, which was jacked up to a whopping 10.75% for Chicago (a little less for C(r)ook County burbs) not too long ago. Fortunately, the guy behind this increase got bounced out of office. The rate for the county lowered a bit, and the city of Chicago rate is "down" to 9.5%. However, in the downtown district, the rate remains a staggering 10.75%.

And the geniuses behind this got the law to mandate that one pays the county rate even if you live elsewhere in the state but purchase something from a county retailer who ships to you. Buy online from ABT Electronics in north suburban Glenview, for example, and you get socked with the high sales tax rate, even if you live in Carbondale, hundreds of miles to the south.

pffftttt.... you shouldn't talk about things you know nothing about. A landscaper, tree climber, trash truck operator, iron worker, guy spreading asphalt on the road, roofer, anyone who works outside in a hot humid climate buys this shit because it quenches their thirst, easy to get, and a good bang for the buck. At 2 PM on a hot June or August afternoon those soda drinks are flowing the bigger the better, and not a kid in sight................
The dude operating the bulldozer isn't a kid more then likely. You just don't know any thing about that world, trust me these guys aren't going to "Starbucks" for a muffin.

Check out the windsill on a mail carriers truck any summer afternoon if you don't see the mail trucks piled up at the mini-mart lot.

ok fair enough - so your answer is ??????

my point would be on a pure health level, if adults want to overindulge that's one thing - they should be smart enough to know
but kids? protect the kids then
like with cigarettes or alcohol

btw your avatar is REALLY scary

Chance,

For someone who seems quite the opposite of liberal and who appears to be more right of center, your support of such intrusive, restrictive laws seems rather hypocritical. Just sayin'.

Okay, good point, but having worked as a landscaper, tree climber (fun, in the right tree), roofer, and painter in the hot sun I learned one thing fast: if there was a choice between drinks at 11 calories per ounce and one at 5 calories per ounce, both nice and chilled, you take the one at 5 calories per ounce, because after the first few ounces the high-calorie stuff doesn't actually quench thirst.

And those calories don't have to be soda: fruit juice, vitamin water, a low-caffeine energy drink, a sport drink -- or, what I usually made, a mix of those -- is a lot better for a guy and keeps hydration and energy up better.

That's why I think labeling drinks with the calories would make a difference. And if the low-cal version had vitamins and minerals to keep you going, it would be a no-brainer.

not sure what you're basing your knowledge of me on but i would say that when it comes to children - protecting them from obesity which is a huge problem in the U.S. especially .......

I worked for a year or so in the field of school food - finding ways to feed kids breakfast and lunch - for free - in schools

so I know the problem well - kids are not eating nutritionally at home - especially in low income homes - they eat chips, soda, fried foods, fast foods - it's a problem that is not going away

it's easy to blame the parents and they are responsible but in many cases, one parent is around - she is working - she doesn't have the bandwidth or education to know or prioritize

thus

if the mayor can do this - and help

I'm all for it

personal freedom - big soda ? non starter IMO

Start chipping away at simple freedoms like what size drinks we can buy, and the door is open to ANYthing. Your logic makes no sense. It's not the job of the government to tell Americans what size drinks we can buy!

It's also not the job of the government to take the place of one or both parents in obesity issues.

Hmm, HOWEVER poor eating habits ultimately put weight on the economy through healthcare. Abortion alleviates pressure from it. To put it cynically.

That said, I am totally against government regulating what you eat. Those efforts should go into educating people.

Okay, then do it this way: change the law, and put a sign on the counter that says:

You must be sixteen years of age or older to buy a drink that will fuck up your body.

:p

Okay, here's another idea:

We let people buy whatever size drink they want, but any drink over 12 oz gets an additive that makes guys impotent.

Let people figure it out for themselves.
