It was why I started the thread - I was just watching/glancing at the news, and the business segment mentioned yet another western company bought out along with the phrase 'Chinese-owned' - it's a phrase I hear more and more often these days, yet it was never there even a few years ago.

So that then got me thinking about their largely hidden (i.e. undiscussed/reported) investments in Africa, and I realised how very quietly and surreptiously and slyly they're buying up power and influence all over the world, behind the scenes. It then reminded me of the sneaky Romulans.

Then I expanded the metaphor and thought of the belligerent agressive Russians showing their power (match for Klingons) - and actually, Saudi Arabia/Dubai/Qatar/Emirates/Abu Dhabi are all very good matches for the Ferengi - in your face investments, brand names, sponsorships, wealth, pandering to tourists, flashy, showy, extravagant, full of money, etc.
