The Sad Saga of Former Rep Aaron Schock

Re: Aaron Schock's Downton Abbey-Inspired Office

That or he's being forced out by his own party - if a Dem insider had proof, Schock would already have been outed.

Schock is a victim of his own Republicansim. Were he a Democrat, his sexuality wouldn't matter. As a Republican, he was forced to hide, deny, and vote perniciously.

As a gay man, I doubt that he is proud of everything he did as a congressman. Out of the public eye, perhaps he will be able to become human again.

Re: Aaron Schock's Downton Abbey-Inspired Office

He does fairly scream bossy bottom, but I think that he's probably in trouble from the right on things they agreed to keep silent about if only he'll go away.

Let's face it, if they were purging closet Republican bottoms, Miss Graham wouldn't be looking so smug.

The leaks coming out of Schock's office did reek of take-down. He had an enemy. It's unlikely that Democrats were out for a pickup in a 90% white district that has been represented by Republicans for 70 years.

It will interesting to see who else is might be in their sights.

Re: Aaron Schock's Downton Abbey-Inspired Office

^ Actually not true...this district, since the redistricting after the 2010 census, has no resemblance to what it was previously - or at least no resemblance in the part that covers where I live. The current district covers what had been parts of two or three districts before 2010.

I'm not sure how to compare this current district (which is indeed Gerrymandered as Republican) to anything that existed prior to 2010.

Actually, before 2010, my same town was in a region that was aligned Democratic (slight majority).

Miss [STRIKE]Graham[/STRIKE] Dubois wouldn't be looking so smug.
She always depends on the kindness of strangers, or perhaps Tea Party hacks.

Oh, my stars! she must retire to the fainting couch. (*S*)

retire to the fainting couch. (*S*)

…and watch some "workout DVDs"?!

“Perhaps it’s not totally surprising that the same congressman who spent campaign money on P90X workout DVDs wanted to create a more picturesque setting in which to be photographed, but the rules clearly require him to pay for those renovations himself,” CREW’s executive director Anne Weismann said in a statement. “Again and again, Rep. Schock’s seeming obsession with his image impedes his ability to conduct himself in ethical manner.”

When the controversy about Schock's real estate deals in Peoria hit the news, I did some reading about his district - 91.4% White, 3.9% Black, 2.4% Asian, 0.2% Native American, 2.3% Hispanic - Schock won with nearly 75% of the vote.

The district sounds pretty conservative? The representatives from the area had been fairly moderate in the past- in the 90s, one long-term representative was pushed out of leadership by Gingrich for being too friendly with Democratic legislators.

Did the redistricting change enough of the core demographics to make the district more liberal? If anything, the leaks about Schock sound more like positioning for a more conservative Republican replacement?

Re: Aaron Schock's Downton Abbey-Inspired Office

Rachel or someone said that this was a solid Pub district, that there's little to no chance of it flipping. So sad for Madame SChOCK

I'm not sure of the make-up of the district, before 2010...because I wasn't in the district. I wasn't even CLOSE to that district. The re-drawing was rather extreme.

Looking at the maps, I can see where the district goes both to Peoria and Springfield, but excises the poor and "ghetto" parts (read: Democrat) of both cities. Before 2010, the district that I was in, wasn't even close to either city, and it included the "Quad Cities" (though not Davenport, which is in Iowa) which it doesn't now. The change is extreme, and the district that covers me was drawn more blatantly Republican than the district I was formerly in.

I also have to assume that the old district (which didn't cover me) was substantially less Republican than what it is now.

This is the same kind of Gerrymandering shit that the Republicans did in Texas, but in this case it was done by Democrats.

Re: Aaron Schock's Downton Abbey-Inspired Office

So does that mean Schock's replacement will have to take on that office with its nouveau-resignation decor? Or will Schock (with his photographer chum) have to drive a moving van up to the back door and unload all of that bad taste and career debris? If so on the second question, Im sure that Mr. Schock himself will post all sorts of pics of the move on Instagram before, during, or after checking his Grindr---if, that is, the photographer and he are not exclusive.

At his being a total dumb-ass I just laugh. As for his being so anti-gay, I say good riddance. Maybe he can open a used furniture/interior design shop which does not allow gays in the door for religious reasons. Not for his own, necessarily, but for his right-wing fellows who have conveniently cast him aside.

Schock is about as "conservative" as they come, so I doubt that Republicans are dumping him because he's not conservative enough. He votes 100% with the party block, so they could hardly ask for better loyalty. I also don't think they're dumping him because he's gay. He's one of their best fundraisers. It would be in their interest to go on pretending he is straight, as they have for the past 7 years, and go on spending the money he brings in (Schock has been generous in sharing his abundance with his party).

I think this is more personal. Schock has an enemy, possibly one of the Republican challengers who want his seat. Someone is forcing Schock's resignation because it is in that person's interest, not because it is in the interest of the GOP.

Of course, the goods on Schock could be something other than his homosexuality. But, his sexuality is his most obvious vulnerability. Schock has been rather careless about hiding it. He's been photographed in gay bars, and was caught by a reporter in the shower with his male "roommate," as Itay Hod famously reported. As I said above, Schock's homosexuality should not matter, in 2015. That it does matter is because Schock himself has made an issue of attacking gay rights aggressively.

Re: Aaron Schock's Downton Abbey-Inspired Office

I've heard a few people pronounce it as "DOWNTOWN Abbey." Lame.

I fully expect that I will still continue to be NOT REPRESENTED by a Republican, but, buh-buh-bye to one of the biggest hypocrites on Capitol Hill.

Between those two portraits, Schock looks like cheap political trade.

Re: Aaron Schock's Downton Abbey-Inspired Office

I find this v v interesting... But he denied that he Never watch an episode of Downton Abbey...

Ever since he stepped onto the national scene as a 27-year-old congressman from Peoria, Illinois, Schock has been trailed by rumors that he is gay. He seemed to check all the boxes: snappy dresser, obsessive concern for his physique, the lack of a female love interest. The rumors have never been confirmed, but Schock didn’t do himself any favors.

Spending $40,000 to redecorate your congressional office with bright red walls in the style of an English country home ripped from the set of Downton Abbey is not the best way to scuttle speculation about one’s sexuality. Nor is throwing a 30th birthday party for yourself along an 1980s theme and handing out single, bedazzled white gloves a la Michael Jackson as party favors (thanks for the gift, Congressman).

If Sen. Blanche Graham has never sent an e-mail, Pretty Boy might not have watched Downtown (sic) Abbey. Oh, my stars!
