60 years ago, the Century 21 Exposition opened on 21 April 1962.
Better known as the 1962 Seattle World's Fair, many feel that this was the event that put Seattle on the map.

What surprises me is the limited video archive material there is on the 1962 Seattle World's Fair.
Publicity films were made by Soundac Productions, Inc. of Miami, Florida. But those are outnumbered by silent recordings.
There's little video from the time that I feel worthy of sharing, so here is a clip from 1962 that's not too awful:

The Seattle of 1962 is long gone. Seattle is completely different thanks to an ever changing demographic makeup.
Today, the Seattle Channel made a 30 minute tribute video highlighting some of the people who helped make the 1962 Fair a reality.

Don't really remember the 1962 fair (I was only 7 at the time :) ); but, I do remember the USPS commemorative :=D:

Interesting stories. It's the 60th anniversary of the Seattle World's Fair, but it's also the 60th anniversary of Montreal, Canada, being granted the 1967 World's Fair: Expo 67.

Expo 67 was Canada's main celebration during its centennial year. The fair had been intended to be held in Moscow, to help the Soviet Union celebrate the Russian Revolution's 50th anniversary; however, for various reasons, the Soviets decided to cancel, and Canada was awarded it in late 1962.

Montreal had only 5 years to make it happen. The problem was that there was nowhere to build it. Mayor Jean Drapeau had the perfect solution. Montreal, at the time, was in the midst of building a massive subway system which meant lots and lots of landfill. So, they used that landfill to build islands in the middle of the St. Lawrence River and build Expo 67 on them.

As mentioned in the quote, 1967 was Canada's Centennial year. We became a self-governing Dominion in 1867.

Here's a short video about it. (You'll love the American pavilion!)

Thank you, gsdx, you've open a path to one of my favorite videos.

^ You're welcome. 1967. The Space Race was just a baby.
