For iPhone and others...

If you don't know what song you're listening to, just hold up the phone to the radio speaker and within seconds Shazam will tell you what song it is, who is singing it, display the albums' artwork and tell you where to buy it.

I'm sorry, folks, but that is just fucking amazing.

What times we are living in.....

Thoughts ?

yeah .. the software of my provider has been doing that since 3+ years.
but yeah iPhone WHAT TIMES DO WE LIVE IN IT IS SOO SMART.. oh wait it's just another phone ](*,) and we can sell old shit as new.

The thing I love about it is that it is FREE. On my previous phone for AT&T the same service cost money, so I never used it.

Well.

Pardon my youthful exuberance, Corny.

I'll strive to be more dark and cynical in future posts.

Yeah, I was kind of disappointed in the response myself. It's not like you were kissing Apple's ass--you were excited about the PROGRAM, not the phone.

My students who have never used a computer are always so excited when they finally learn everything one can do, and if I crapped on their enthusiasm just because I've been using one for over twenty years. . .well, that would just be cruel.

:(

It is cool. I am crap with music, I know what I like but never know what it is called. With this I can find out and even buy it if I like it enough.

i went to a couple of clubs last night with some friends... every time a song hit the speakers hands with iphones shot up to sample the song. i thought it was the coolest thing.

i really love the idea; but i know from experience, it does you no good if your taste in music are off the wall because you're either a music connoisseur or if your heritage is different

and god help you if you're a music connoisseur with a different heritage! ;)

I agree that this technology is pretty impressive. As a software engineer who's had extensive graduate education in Computer Science, it's rare that I come across a piece of software where I wonder, "wow, how the heck do they do that?" That they can match 15 seconds of a song against a massive database of music in a couple seconds is simply astounding.

I've been rather surprised with some of the relatively obscure stuff Shazam has matched for me. Their database is much more extensive than you might think. It's more than the latest mainstream stuff.

I'm impressed by how well it works in noisy places like clubs and bars too. It's mostly a novelty, but I do love being able to figure out what song is playing on the jukebox without walking over there.

Yean my boyfriend has this application on his phone but only ever used it when holding it up to my music, which contained both the track name, vocalist and album to start with. So pretty useless so far. Plus can you imagine standing in a crowded bar with your phone in the air, pointing it toward the speakers.

it doesn't even work for a lot of canadian stuff, never mind something obscure. it has its limitations but it is cool when it works, and you only buy the program once instead of paying for it as a service.

I've got a similar thing on my Sony Ericsson phone, fantastic app that has helped me add quite a few songs to my library :D
