This movie is REALLY good!! It's one of a few "horror" movies that actually scared me. What I really like is how it is so parallel to the novel. Sure, they have the same basic plot (a man being broken down by an unseen force) but the differences outweigh the similarities. And Shelly Duval is so AWESOME in this move, she really makes you look at her as the character Wendy Torrence, not as the actress playing a role. Ok Im done, just had to share my love of this movie with you guys. Who here has seen the movie and read the book? Does the movie scare you guys too?

Before I read your Shelly Duval reference, I thought you were referring to the Emmy Award winning, late 1990s TV miniseries as opposed to the 1980 Kubrick directed motion picture. From other people's thoughts on the matter, the former is allegedly better.

Hahahaha.....yeah I know ::in willies voices:: ""The Shinnin" HAHAHA!!

I didnt notice it until now but its "The Shining"

The book also kept me awake at night, I read it for hours on end because it was so thrilling I could not put it down. The book gives you SO MUCH MORE detail into The Overlook, former owners, and even some of the guests. I kind of see the book and the film as two separate stories. They are pretty much opposite of each other in every aspect, a mirror image kind of. And I think that Kubrick wanted to portray that in the movie. There is a lot of mirrors being used in the filming of the movie. And if you pay close enough attention to the little details in the movie, you would see it didn't stop there.

The only part I wished would have made it into the movie is the hedge animals, but that would have probably been way too difficult to film back then.

I Love The Movie, never Read The book.

It was a creepy movie, shelly duvall was brilliant, she was so homely looking.

I just think its a brilliant movie, my thoughts may change if i ever read the book. but yeah, def. a favorite of mine..

I loved the book, hated the movie, and loved the mini-series.

Kubrick took too many liberties with the book's plot, and Nickleson was way too over the top, especially in the earlier part of the film. I thought Shelly captured King's characterization perfectly. The little boy was quite good.

^ Same here. Saw the movie first when I was kid, scared.

Read the book in high school - scarier.

Saw the mini-series, and felt it did more justice to the book than Kubrick's version. Loved it.

The topiary menagerie is definitely more frightening than Kubrick's maze.

The lady in the bath-tub from the mini-series gave me nightmares...I felt like someone was sleeping beside me the whole night.

The last shot of Jack Nicholson frozen in the snow still scares me. Despite its length, 'The Shining' is an excellent movie.

The TV remake was terrible though.

The big difference between the motion picture and the television version is that the motion picture was actually scary and creepy. The television movie was not, even though it followed more closely to the book. Kubrick was brilliant in how he made the hotel actually seem alive with spirits in its dead silence of the cold winter.

The Movie is a classic, even though it takes many liberties with the book.

The remade TV mini-series shows that keeping faithful to a book doesn't always work.

The scene when Jack walks into that immense ballroom, and its filled with the ghosts of partygoers is SO amazing. They don't make horror movies like The Shining anymore.

I liked the movie a lot better than the book. But the book was good. It's a great story, and I just love the setting. It creeps me out.
