So what do you think? It finally leaked online about a week ago.

I think that it's a solid album, but at this point in my listening it doesn't hold up to their masterpieces (in my opinion those are Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, and Adore). Some of the synth-heavy tracks toward the end are just bizarre and I'm not sure whether or not I like them. I also think that "United States" easily could've been shortened to make it more tight/focused. The last couple minutes of "US" are great, though. The one other track I don't like is "(Come On) Let's Go!"; I feel like it doesn't really build to anything.
Anyway, aside from those few tracks, I think that songs like "Doomsday Clock," the "Zero"-ish "7 Shades of Black," "Bleeding the Orchid," potential radio hit "That's the Way (My Love Is)," first single "Tarantula," and the vocal-layered "Starz" are very solid and some of the Pumpkins' best work.

And about the critics' reactions, I think that they're judging the album solely on Billy Corgan's ego and the fact that it isn't a full reunion (in case you didn't already know, James Iha and D'Arcy Wretzky aren't in it this time around). I think that they let the background of the reunion interfere with the music, but that isn't right.

Thoughts?

Their Live Earth show was alright. It made me upload my mellon collie and the infinite sadness cd (legally) onto my ipod. God I havent touched that CD since 2000. Still my favorite song has to be tonight tonight. I plan to pick up the CD when it comes out

The new one might not be as good as Mellon Collie, but I think it's still pretty good, at least compared to Machina/The Machines of God.

I think Zeitgeist is a good, solid album. I gave it a 4 / 5. Honestly, the problems with the reviews were they simply didn't like Billy anymore. Allmusic (which I thought would be a good review) gave it a 2 out of 5; it was a 2-page article talking about the band's history, Billy's ego, and sprinkled a few song titles here and there... there was no review!

As sad as I find it, Pitchfork actually had the most fair and balanced review. I hate Pitchfork, but they finally got something right. I enjoyed the album very much.

I think what it comes down to is if you compare it to the rest of the catalog, you'll quickly figure out it's their worst album yet. But if you just take "Zeitgeist" as it is, you'll see it's actually a good cd, that beats out anything in Alternative Rock now.

I've listened through once...and I'm not compelled to listen again. Nothing stuck.

Can someone please tell me is Melissa Auf Der Maur back with them or is she doing other projects? I believe she was bass guitar.

"Disarm" is still one of my favorite songs ever. Billy and has band kind of peaked in the mid 90's.

"The killer in me is the killer in you..." talk about a line that sticks in your head...

I don't think it's the worst of their albums, but at this point I don't think it's better than Mellon Collie, Siamese Dream, or Adore.
And what the hell is up with the reviews, like you mentioned? It sounds so immature to read these reviews that talk about the context of the album - as in the reunion, Billy's ego, and the 4 versions for purchase - and have a few sentences about the actual music. Like you, I was expecting that allmusic.com would give a very fair review, like that site usually gives. Instead it just focused on the band's history for 3/4 of it and 1/4 of it for the songs.
Pitchfork did give a fair review, but the actual words of the review read better than the rating they gave it (4.9/10). Based on the actual text of the review, it sounded more like a 6 or 7.

Cammtl, hate to tell you this, but Melissa Auf Der Maur isn't involved in the reunion. Instead there's the new bassist, Ginger Reyes. I would've preferred to have Melissa or original bassist D'Arcy, but the album's still good. Apparently Melissa is working on her second solo album. I have her first, but it's really not my cup of tea.

You should see one of the pics in the special edition book. It's a bass in a coffin... Low blow Billy, lol, low blow..

Thanx for the info on Melissa:eek:

I've only heard two songs.

Tarantula is the biggest turd to drop from them since "Adore." While Adore sounds like someone who had too much burritos on a toilet, Tarantula sounds like five band members playing five diffrerent songs in five different keys in five different studios unable to hear each other.

the other song actually sounded pretty good.

I'll wait to buy the album before I make too many judgements.

Being a huge SP fan and purist...i have to say the new album is a disappointment...atleast to me. the mere fact that it isnt truely an SP reunion...because james and darcy arent there....turns me off to the entire idea of SP existing. i can say im perfectly content to listen to their previous albums in bliss. i do find the fact that the new members are former members of christian bands kind of strange. it also leads me to believe that billys ideology has taken over the music. truth be told...in all fact...i believe SP is and forever will be dead.
.....also the bass in the coffin thing is honestly wretched. From the point of view of this spectator....billy should let go of the past....and concentrate on what he can sell to the jaded masses as "SP".

I can understand not being able to (at least initially) get past the reunion thing, but I think in time people will get used to it. I think it'd be better if Jeff and Ginger are involved in the recording process on the next album. Thus, instead of seeming like very disposable touring members, people can move on with the fact that James and D'Arcy/Melissa aren't in it. However, I do think that the critics should've moved past the half reunion thing. The vast majority of negative reviews almost exclusively mentioned the half-reunion and barely mentioned the songs.

Soilwork: Adore is my 2nd favorite Pumpkins album. Sure, it's not as rocking as any of their others at all, but I think it's an excellent album and classic.

Yeah.. there's two camps on Adore.

Those who do and those who dont'.

I don't. it's the only album by them that I can say I dont' like at all. It wasn't even really a Pumpkins album so much as a Billy Corrigan solo record. it had a keyboard bass and a drum mahcine, for crying out loud.

I don't think it's rocking at all. I think it's the antithesis of rocking. It was, to me, the sonic equivalant of a bag of wet cement hitting the ground. That first single was a joke. Perfect just sounded to me like 1979 with less of a hook.

But some people loved it. It's kinda their Tusk or their White Album. Thier Emotional Rescue. Fans will debate that one forever.

^ Enh. I wasn't a huge fan of Adore. I can understand what he was doing. As amazing as Mellon Collie was, it sort of painted him into a corner. I mean, what do you do for an encore? Well, when you're in a corner, the best way out is to jump. So he went for the electronic swirling sort of feel on that album. But while I appreciate what he did, and why he did it, none of the songs really clicked. The most memorable song on the album (to me) was "Perfect", and that's because it...well, sounded normal. Up until that point, Billy was astute enough to keep the hooks front and center no matter what else he was doing ("Bullet With Butterfly Wings" kicks so much ass not because of the sheer rock of it - although that's impressive - but because there's still a sing-song melody over top). Adore didn't have much of that. Something that's sort of plagued him ever since, in my VERY humble-and-if-you-don't-agree-that's-both-fine-and-not-surprising opinion.

I can see why you wouldn't like Adore, but there are some very hook-filled songs on that album. Notably "Pug," "Ava Adore," "Daphne Descends," and "For Martha." I think that most people have to put themselves into a different mindset as if this is a different band in order to appreciate it.

Like I said, fans will debate this one forever.

I still think most of the album sounds like someone farting into a toilet.

oh... and as far as the new album goes... it's really not bad at all.

Not their best, but one of the better ones, anyway.

Oh my, you are harsh on Adore Soilwork.

Adore, in my opinion, has some of the most powerful and moving song in the Smashing Pumpkins archive. I see no one has yet to mention "Tear", one of the best song on the album. There was a version of it live and all I can say was, WOW. Here it is if anyone is interested. And to be honest, I don't really mind Jimmy's absence in the album, the drum machine was wondrous in it's work.

Well, whatever, I thought Adore was amazing. The new album I haven't heard from yet but I'm a bit worried thanks to all the negative reviews about it. Bleh

PS:here's a really sexy cover of To Sheila if anyone wants to check it out.
