This is the aircraft that captured my imagination in 1961 when I was 4 years old! The North American XB-70 "Valkyrie", was in development as America's supersonic bomber, able to sustain speeds in excess of mach 3. The Kennedy administration cancelled the XB-70 program in early 1961. The expense of a supersonic bomber was deemed impractical with the advent of Soviet ground to air missiles.

The Sala Regia, a hall adjacent to the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. The hall was begun under Pope Paul III by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and was completed in 1573. The elegant barrel vault is graced by the very impressive plaster decorations of Perino del Vaga. The stucco ornaments over the doors are by Daniele da Volterra.

The walls were decorated by Livio Agresti, Giorgio Vasari and Taddeo Zuccari. The frescoes depict momentous turning-points in the history of the Church, including the return of Pope Gregory XI from Avignon to Rome, the Battle of Lepanto, the raising of the ban from Henry IV, the reconciliation of Pope Alexander III with Frederick Barbarossa and Peter II of Aragon offering the Kingdom to Pope Innocent III.

The hall was originally used for the reception of princes and royal ambassadors, hence its name. Today consistories are held in it, and an occasional musical recital in the presence of the pope; during a conclave it is used as a promenade for the cardinals.

1911 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost formerly belonging to the Maharaja of Mysore. The rulers of India, the Maharajas of various states and city-states, were loyal customers of the Rolls-Royce brand. The coronation of King George V was celebrated by all of the Princes of India in what was called the Delhi Durbar. This beautiful Rolls-Royce is one of eight Silver Ghosts with identical landaulette bodies provided for this special event. After the coronation, it was presented to the Maharaja of Mysore, who had it rebodied with this magnificent open (to suit the tropical climate) Victoria to be used for parades and other special ceremonies by the Maharaja.

The passengers riding in the elevated rear seat are protected from the sun by a folding victoria top. The large umbrella in the rear was to provide partial shading for the guards and retainers standing at attention in the sun. A very thoughtful gesture on part of the Maharaja.
