Those two commercial blocks on the north side of the building need to be demolished. All the woodwork needs to be stripped out. All the the artworks need to be moved offsite permanently.

Well it looks like they have saved part of the structure. I don't know about the art and relics, although I understand they were taking them out. The French President says they will rebuild.

Terribly sad--only there once---but much of it has been saved and it will be rebuilt --one billionaire already donated 100 mill and sure much more will come---the guys working up there are going to be questioned ---hope it wasn't a dumb discarded cigarette from a smoke break....or worse.

Regarding Viollet-le-Duc as St. Thomas the Apostle, patron saint of carpenters and architects:

Viollet-le-Duc was only following the example of other artists: we find Ghiberti's bust on his gilded bronze doors, Gozzoli looks out to us from his Procession of the Magi, and Michelangelo casts himself as Joseph of Arimathea holding the body of Christ in his Florence Pieta'. There are numerous other examples. I'm sure there are hundreds of portraits in stone of the great masons and sculptors who built and adorned the great medieval cathedrals. Viollet-le-Duc was an inestimably fine architect, and I am happy to find that he portrayed himself as his patron saint.

Such a shame, hopefully they have enough archived material to build it again.

There is surely archived material dating back to the restoration and recreation of the mid-19th century as well as this most recent restoration, now halted.

A few years ago I visited the Fondation de Coubertin, the workshop that was commissioned to recreate the gates to Versailles. No detailed drawings or documents had survived to duplicate exactly the original gates, and period engravings of the entire ensemble contradicted each other, so the designers and artisans working on the project made educated decisions as best they were able. There will be much more information--complete information, I assume--for Notre Dame.

It is rather pathetic that some posters immediately had to make this thread topic about something else. Particularly given most of the drivel they think is thread worthy. I guess that when you only have ranking whores as your primary cultural pursuit, it taints how you view the world.

I think that perhaps you have to have visited Notre Dame to feel the pain of its destruction.

Many of its windows...dating back to 1260 have been destroyed, although one has apparently survived intact.

The north and south rose windows are among the most magnificent works of art from the medieval period. Period.

It was my understanding that very little of the cathedral other than the stone fabric dates to the 13th century.

When Victor Hugo's novel was written the edifice was a partial ruin. Previously during the reign of the Bourbon kings, the 1260 windows were removed and replaced with clear glass. The south and west (facade) roses were also redone in the 19th century.

Thanks for posting these.

The greatest concern that I would have for the fabric of the building would be the stresses from the weight of the collapsed roof structure on top of the stone vaulting.

It is a testament to the original engineering and construction that it was able to withstand the weight of a heavy timber, lead sheathed roof and all the water poured onto the flames.
