The unthinkable: a 17-yr-old at the Tate in London threw a 6-yr.-old French tourist off the 10th floor balcony

It's a very barbaric punishment for someone that is obviously some kind of mentally deficient.

Yes, that was the idea.

He was sane enough to be free range, then he is sane enough to be put down for attempted murder.

Tape his eyes open before the fling.

Life is so shocking at times. A child visits a museum, there to have him world expanded and learn, and the next moment, he's thrown to the ground and almost killed, by sheer malice.

And people doubt that evil exists.

^ What people doubt, included those who are certain that evil exists, is that evil is as common as dirt (being, actually, two kinds of the same ilk): but, for the ones, it is so common, that they are not able to discern it, and the others only acknowledge it when it fits their own fits' wavelength, that is, when it disturbs them personally.

When you read or hear something like this on the news you say to yourself why on earth would another person do such a terrible thing really come on

Seemingly he really is mad and not bad.

I'm not sure the two are mutually exclusive.

When we hear someone is deranged, we rightly sympathize with their suffering and hold them to a less accountable standard for conduct they cannot control.

On the other hand, when a deranged man rapes your granddaughter, or flings your son off a building, or feeds your pet to the gators, it's bad. He's bad, if still not fully accountable.

But we're kinda kidding ourselves when we suggest being in an asylum is some more merciful treatment than being in a prison. It may sound ruthless, but I'm not certain that there is not a good argument to be made for euthanasia in extreme cases, which amounts to a death sentence.

I don't buy the argument that it is somehow humane or merciful to keep incurably deranged and violent people alive until a germ or disease of age kills them.

Such an unimaginable horror. Just to think of the shock of being told your young child was thrown off a building.

I guess it's doubly fortunate that the boy survived. If he'd been killed instantly, it's not hard to imagine the father taking vengeance with no hesitation. It would be a blind rage indeed.

Maybe he is simply a budding psychopath. One has to have a really severe lack of respect for Life and for others to do this. And psychopaths are mentally ill people, too. Phrasing it as "someone having mental health issues" can be dangerous. I wouldn't want to live next door to Hannibal Lector, Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer. You think people have much sympathy for them? I'd put the boy away for 10 years, since it's not advised to diagnose certain mental illnesses (sociopathy and psychopathy) until the person is over 18. By that time, it would be clear what he is (or is not).

Ah. I see they gave him at least 15 years. A wise decision. If he's a psychopath, he should never be set free.

OH! Even better, upon reading another article.

"“The fear he (the victim) must have experienced and the horror his parents felt are beyond imagination,’’ said Central Criminal Court Judge Maura McGowan. “You had intended to kill someone that day. You almost killed that 6-year-old boy.”

McGowan acknowledged expert evidence that Bravery presents “a grave and immediate risk to the public.”

“You will spend the greater part - if not all - of your life detained. ... You may never be released,” she said."

Even wiser. It seems as though he has been adjudged as a psychopath.

No. They should throw him off a 10th floor balcony. Punishment fits the crime.
