The US goes to War

If you haven't travelled in the Caribbean lately, you might have missed the economic aid provided by China over the last 20 years including schools, hospitals and infrastructure.

As Europe, Canada and the US withdreww, China was right there exercising soft power and literally 'presence'.

And frankly, if US Americans still have this fantasy that they are Taiwan's protector and have any real influence in South east Asia, that is worth a trip as well to see how increasingly irrelevant the US and Europe
are in the region.

:grrr:

Aren't thay all so lucky that GQP consider them 'white'...and not swarthy Hispanics like Puerto Rico.
Nah, 67% of Cubans are of African ancestry. The Cubans whom the US presidents welcomed after the fall of Bautista tended to be the wealthier, non-swarthy people—but they were (and are) the comparative Cuban minority.

I was only being a little sarcastic...precisely because of the point that you made.

Although the GQP can suddenly be very forgiving if it means they lock in those votes.

It is actually just as likely that it will be the Floridan Cubanos who recoil at the thought of the hoi polloi flooding their neighbourhoods.

It's very interesting, though, how the way that Latinos view themselves differs from how politicians view them.

It's true that Mexicans, Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Argentinians, et al, have distinctions made based upon class and skin color. It's also true that there's some degree of snobbery and even animosity between the different groups. The Cuban-Americans are particularly interesting in how they cleave themselves based upon skin color and based upon which wave of immigration they arrived in.

In contrast, as long as the group votes Republican, they get a pass as being a "desirable immigrant". On the other hand, if they tend to vote Democrat, they are considered a foreigner.

What will happen when the remnants of the Castro regime fall and there's normalization of relations between the U.S. and Cuba?

Will the people on the island feel perpetually grateful to the GOP for "freeing" them? I think of one of my Cuban colleagues who says that he wouldn't mind if the island were renamed "Trumplandia." And he has shown me photos of his relatives kneeling--barefoot--over a small outdoor fire for cooking food. He says that they are mad that Trump invaded Iran before invading Cuba. Incidentally, my colleague's 'look' is very ambiguous.

Or... when (if) the browner Cubans become more visible in the EE UU and become subject to the customary ethno-racial sorting here, will they align themselves more with the Democrat party? To be sure, race is structured differently among Latinos, but the basic premise is the same south of the U.S. as in the U.S.--just ask lighter-skinned Boriquas who want to play the Super Bowl en español. 😉

The American government keeps falling for ex-pat fantasies about being "greeted as liberators". Ahmed Chalabi. Reza Pahlavi. The Calle Ocho crowd.

The answer is "No one knows what will happen". Because there is no plan. Cuba has been the plaything of Spain and the US for most of its existence. Prior to Castro, it existed in a state that was just slightly better than chattel slavery. While the wealthy plantation owners and elite lost their standing in the revolution, Afro-Cubans had a much different experience, particularly in educational opportunities.

Cuban-Americans are an odd predicament. On one hand, they like the freedoms and the opportunities in America. On the other hand, they talk about something that sounds a lot like "Make Cuba Great Again". They want to be an independent country with self-determination, so they won't be as receptive to the idea of being yet another possession of the US. And the Iraq experience should be a cautionary tale about taking over socialistic societies that are used to being subsidized with free healthcare and low cost of living.

Another Middle Eastern country learns what it is like to be betrayed by US bombs....if Iranians thought the oiligarchs loved them as brothers and wanted them to be free.....nah...they still only want your oil and will bomb your cities to glass and then walk away, leaving the survivors to eke out whatever existence they can.

I really do think that graham has lost her wits.

In Iran, the US has chnaged nothing. In Venezuela, the US has changed nothing. In Ukraine, the US is now the ally of the Invader. The US has made it clear...it doesn't actually give a shit about freedom and
rights. It is on a rampage to steal resources to prop up a failing oligarchy.

What Miz Lindsay fails to apprehend is that the US is bringing nothing to the world now, except death and destruction.

Intersectionality.....

From 'The other 98%'

"Toxic black rain is falling on a city of 10 million people. Theran is burning from the inside out, bombs hit fuel depots bleeding oil into gutters that catch fire block by block , and the ordinary people choking on it can't even call for help because their internet is running at 1%.
By Sunday morning, nearly 10 million residents woke to skies so dark from smoke they had to turn on their lights just to see inside their homes.
Then came the rain, oil-saturated, black, coating cars, balconies, and skin for miles in every direction.
Iran’s Red Crescent warned the explosions released massive quantities of toxic hydrocarbons, sulfur, and nitrogen oxides into the air, and that the resulting rainfall was extremely dangerous and highly acidic, capable of causing skin burns and severe lung damage.
This is what 'degrading Iran’s military infrastructure' looks like in practice: an environmental catastrophe blanketing a civilian population in petrochemical poison.
Nine days into this war, joint U.S.-Israeli strikes have now killed over 1,300 people in Iran and roughly 300 in Lebanon. These fuel depot strikes represent the first targeting of Iranian oil infrastructure since the war began, and the economic fallout is staggering.
U.S. oil prices posted their biggest weekly gain since at least 1985, with WTI surging over 38% and Brent crude climbing above $94 per barrel , while American gas prices jumped 14% in a single week to $3.41 per gallon."
Meanwhile, Iran’s internet has been running at roughly 1% of normal levels for over a week , meaning millions of people breathing toxic air can’t access independent safety information, contact family abroad, or document what’s being done to them.
Human Rights Watch has condemned the blackout, noting it restricts access to lifesaving information about where strikes are occurring and how to reach medical care.
Trump posted 'today Iran will be hit very hard' on Truth Social Saturday afternoon. By Saturday night, fuel depots were burning. By Sunday morning, he told reporters he knew nothing about it. The rain was already black."

This is what Trump's 'Peace' looks like.

Iranians aren't going to welcome the US and Israel into a country despoiled and destroyed.

They will hate their regime and they will end up hating the US even more than before.

We'll know definitively that this latest episode of The Chump Show has 'jumped the shark' when Americans are marching in the streets daily--just like at the end of his last shit show.

So after months of insults, threats, tariffs, more insults and threats, more tariffs and on and on...and after countries like Canada sacrificed our men and women in Afghanistan only to see Trump just hand it back over to the Taliban...thanks US....we'll get back to you....
