The Wizard of Oz

I really quite liked the film. No one, and I mean no one, sings "Over The Rainbow" like Judy Garland.

well - maybe -

certainly worth honorable mention...

How in the world can any self-loving gay boi NOT love this movie????

One of my favorite versions of "Oz" is the Muppets one. I like the line Fozzie has when they approach Emerald City and are questioned about who they are: "We're friends of Dorothy!" I have a feeling the writers snuck in this line as a joke, knowing the standard connotation of the phrase.

I remember when I was 10 or 11, waking up early every week day morning to watch this on TV before going to school. It played from 8am for about 20 minutes. I never missed an episode. Such good memories.

I remember it being very detailed too - lots of scenes from the book - the poppy fields, and the field mice, the heading South to see Glinda, the silver shoes, the people who lived in the dainty china country and who were made of china...

...and then I remember the follow up series where Dorothy returns to Oz and meets and helps Ozma escape from Mombi. Wow. Clearly it made an impression on me!!

Seen it countless times, but all i can take of it now is Over The Rainbow, and first 10 minutes in OZ.

I think I agree. It falls into the syndrome of films which are fabulous in the first half but get bogged down and repetitive in the second.

Others in the same syndrome include 'Gone with the Wind', 'Great Expectations', 'Psycho'.

The Wiz starring Dianna Ross and Michael Jackson was the black version in the gettos like film.

There is a new film version remake coming starring Michelle Williams.

This is my number one fave movie!! I can't wait to see what the studio does for the 75th anniversary release!!! (2013 or '14)

It's odd to see it on Blu-ray.

SO many of the sets look obviously painted (which of course they are....)

The ruby slippers, and many other colors don't seem so "amped up", it just looks like what it is....a movie filmed in 1939.

But you see, therein lies the magic. It looks YEARS ahead of it's time. It has a story (of sorts) to tell, and does it brilliantly, with special effects that didn't even exist yet.

Why do SO many gays love it ? Because we have good taste, I suspect.

The moral of it all ? meh. I suppose it's that all you are looking for is right in front of you.

It's hard to argue with that one.

I've never liked the film at all ... except for the flying monkeys. Anyone else just as happy if they never saw it again?

I actually have always liked the movie. But cheers to you for shedding the sheep mentality that has prevailed over so many in this community. I'm so sick of people saying that I'm not gay or I'm self-loathing just because I don't like things on their gay litmus test like liking Madonna or whatever. Not everyone has the same tastes!

I always say It's the perfect kid's fantasy film. It's Brilliant. On another note I would love to see what Walt Disney and Jim Henson would have done with the material.

I watched this movie every year as a child, usually broadcast around Easter.

There is so much to love! The instantly memorable songs, the colours, the over the top characters.

One reason for its gay appeal may be that the imaginative adventure has strong females as both the protaganist and the antagonist, which practically guarantees the movie will have appeal to many gay men.

The Wicked Witch of the West was a big part of this appeal. The story is quite sinister at times, like when the witch threatens to drown Toto and to kill Dorothy with a spell when the hourglass runs out. The story came close to the line of being too scary for kids, but didn't cross it, stopping at just the right point of being fascinating.

As an additional point for me, having grandparents who lived in an old farmhouse, Dorothy's return home had a particularly sentimental appeal.

It's a timeless classic.
