As The World Turns

With ATWT signing off soon are you going to miss it?

Re: As The World Turns

The only time I really watched it was when I was in the first grade staying home from school over half a century ago when I was sick.
The problem is that the networks are fixated on youth as if us mature audiences dont buy anything but Geritol. They dont want to appeal to older viewers for fear of guilt by association, coupled with less talented new writers who need to grind out a show every week day for shows that started out as fifteen and thirty minute shows stretched out to an hour so they need to fluff it out.
One aunt told me about how Guiding Light declined about the time they shot it in color and how it was better on the radio and early TV.

Re: As The World Turns

Ugh.

How can anyone watch these shows? They're boring as hell!

Re: As The World Turns

Not at all, the European soaps were always better to me. Christian & Olli>>>>> Noah and Luke

Re: As The World Turns

I will, Cammtl. I'm a comparative newbie, having only started watching just before Jon Lindstrom aired as Craig. And after the show was renamed AS JANET'S BOSOM HEAVES. So I only know the show after she became so integral. Started watching to see the big fat hairy deal that was Nuke. I didn't know they were on so seldom and were given such infantile storylines. I'm loving LuRe and am gonna be unhappy if it ends with Reid dying as the spoilers say. I have to admit I teared up when Henry proposed to Barbara yesterday. They are wonderful together! So how long have you watched and what do you want to see happen?

Re: As The World Turns

I will definitely miss ATWT. Of all the soaps, it was undoubtedly the best acted. I recently turned on AMC (by accident) and I couldn't believe how bad the acting was.

ATWT has not been as good this last year . Getting rid of Martha Byrne (realLily) and Scott Bryce (realCraig) were two of the biggest bonehead moves I've ever seen. But with powerhouses like Maura West, Trent Dawson, Michael Park, Elizabeth Hubbard and Colleen Zenk, it still has the best cast in daytime.

Re: As The World Turns

I will miss the Noah and Luke story.

Hello soap watchers.... according to the powers that be at CBS, we are a dieing breed...

With only 14 episodes of "As the World Turns" left, I thought I'd start the same kind of countdown and discussion that I did last year, when "Guiding Light" went off the air.

ATWT is the very last soap opera produced by Procter & Gamble. The remaining soaps on American TV are either a product of their network or independently produced. For those of us that grew up during the golden age of daytime, the soaps were a wonderful diversion that we were able to share with our stay-at-home mothers.

While my late mother did her housework, the CBS soaps were always on in the background. They were a daily constant. We were taken to on a whirlwind trip through soapdom each afternoon. because the soaps were only 30 minutes long, it was not unusual to visit characters in many different towns each day. But one of my favorite stops was Oakdale, IL home to the Hughes family.

I'm old enough to remember when Grandpa Hughes was still alive, and Penny was running The Wade Bookstore. I remember Dan and Paul Stewart, and their grandfather, Judge Lowell. I remember a young Dr. Bob married to Sandy at the time, and Lisa's torment at the hands of Dr. Michael Shea.

But the World has turned quite a bit more since those days...

And on today's episode (European spoiler alert....) life in Oakdale changed for all the characters with the announcement that the show's matriarch, the beloved Nancy Hughes, had passed away quietly in her apartment. She was found by her son, Dr. Bob. Bob made the announcement at Tom and Margo's house, where the Hughes clan had been called together by Chris, who was about to break the news to his family that he had caught a virus to his heart while working in Africa, and that it could potentially be fatal.

With Chris's illness, Reid had called in the best heart specialist he could think of, none other than the legendary Dr. John Dixon, himself. I think this is the final redemption for the John, who will save Chris's life.

So that brings us to the question of the day.....

Which ATWT couples do you think will find "happily ever after" by the time the last episode is finished on Friday, September 17?

I am going to go with the safe bets.....Barbara and Henry will happy, as will Chris (once he suffers a little more) and Katie. Casey and Alison will be engaged and will go off to Carbondale together. The consistently solid relationships, Tom and Margo, Paul and Emily, Kim and Bob will endure.

But what of the others? Will Holden and Lily find their way back together (hint, hint.....rumor has it that Molly is coming back to town) ? Will Luke ultimately be with Reid or with Noah in California? WIll Dusty and Janet be together? Will Craig be the spoiler between Lily and Holden? Will Jack and Carly FINALLY stay together?

:D

Spoiler is that Reid dies transporting Chris' new heart back to Oakdale and Chris gets his heart instead. That leaves poor Luke heartbroken and being comforted by Noah. And an inconclusive ending for them. I certainly hope that is just b.s. I've heard that Lily and Holden move on, but I'm hoping he doesn't move on to annoying Molly. Janet stays the center of the Oakdale universe and a new soap AS JANET'S BOSOM HEAVES debuts in 2011.

I figured that they might pull something like this. So Reid's gonna die. How convenient that is to push "Nuke" back together. Just when I was really starting to like the Reid character.... I really lost a lot of my investment in this romance because Noah was turned into a wishy-washy whiner.

So Chris will get the happy ending...he gets to live, romance Katie, and probably get the Chief of Staff job at Memorial, while Reid, the smart-assed gay guy dies.....

Holden and Lily were one of ATWT's first supercouples. Granted, Noelle Beck and Jon Hensley do indeed lack chemistry, (not bringing back Martha Byrne when she wanted to come back was a HUGE mistake), but it's like GL's Josh and Reva, they belong together, no matter what...

I really hope the LuRe spoiler is wrong, but Reid dying has been posted for several months. I think even Chris Goutman alluded to it in an interview. He said that Katie is the "sweetheart" of ATWT, so she must have a happy ending. He must not read the posts on the same chat board I do. The only character less liked, by a wide margin for sure, is Janet. And those wanting to see Nuke ride off into the sunset together are almost non-existent. It's LuRe hands down, so needless to say there are many pissed off fans! Good thing for tptb that ATWT is finito.
I never saw ATWT back in the Martha Byrne days so the whole LilLden thing is pretty much lost on me. I do remember seeing pics of a very hot Hensley back in the day, though. And Noelle Beck is easy on the eyes. Very classy, sexy.

Okay, here ia a beautiful gem from ATWT when it was at the top of the ratings in 1985. This was written during the Douglas Marland period. The man was a gifted storyteller.

It opens with John Wesley Shipp as the demented Douglas Cummings, who is later revealed as a psycho, and Frannie's friend marie Kovack, who is later murdered by Cummings. Then, you will see Holden and Lily's first real scene together. Martha Byrne plays a young, spoiled Lily. Brian Bloom played the teen version of Dusty Donovan (and he grw up to be a hunk). And Jon Hensley smoulders sexual tension as Holden... He' was a god then, all sweaty and hairy chested...and he's still got it, twenty five years later! Finally, you will see the early days of Craig (played by hunky Scott Bryce) and Sierra (Finn Carter). Even then, the two of them were disagreeing.

Sierra is the character Mary Beth Evans played a week or so back isn't she? They gave her basically nothing to do. Damn, Hensley was incredible then! He does nothing for me now, unfortunately. I don't think he's aged well at all. JWS on the other hand still looks good. Bloom ain't too shabby either.

I hate what Goutman has done to the show. The final days of ATWT should be about the vets or the people we care about. Why did we have to waste time on the returns of Iris Dumbrowski or Uncle Ralphie? When I think about how the character of Janet Ciccone just ate up screen time during these precious few months left....!
As for what I predict...of course, Jack and Carly will be together, as will Casey and Allison, Barbara and Henry, Luke and Noah, Paul and Emily. I'm okay with that. But unfortunately, we will also get chemistry-free NuLily and Holden, and Insta-Couple Katie and Chris.
If I wrote the ending, on the last show, Lily would morph from Noelle to Martha in the last scene, so ATWT's signature couple reuniting would have some meaning. And I would have Simon swoop into WOAK , sweep Katie off her feet and carry her out of the studio, ala Richard Gere/Deborah Winger in "An Officer and a Gentleman".

I like your endings, Scrapple. I know the last episode was already taped at the end of June, so I am not too hopeful for Martha's return. I also like the idea of Simon coming back and sweeping Katie away. I still think there's unfinished love between them.

Today's episode was all leading up to Bob and Kim finally finding out that Chris is dieing. It was so good to see John Dixon back in the saddle at the hospital. Perhaps he will stay in Oakdale and assume the chief of staff duties once again. In the previews for THursday, it looks like Bob is going to chew Reid a new asshole, and Kim is going to chase Katie away...

And I want to share this 29-year-old gem from 1981...It's a short scene between Dr. John Dixon (Larry Bryggmann) and the evil-incarnate, James Stenbeck (Anthony Hererra). Dixon had been blinded, and Stenbeck was threatening him (I don't remember exactly why). But the good doctor (who wasn't such a good person back then) has a trick up his sleeve... It just shows how consistently good the writing used to be on this show...

ATWT SPOILER ALERT-DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW...

BBJohn, you are 100% correct so far.

I just finished watching the Friday episode on CBS.com.

Chris's situation has become even more serious. Dr. Dixon wanted to put him on a sort of temporary pacemaker, until a donor heart is located. Unfortunately, Chris's heart is so weakened, that the procedure could kill him on the operating table.

The heart that Tom and Margo had found in Bay City ( Another World, may you rest in peace) turned out to be a perfect tissue match for Chris. When some hot-shot doctor there decided to keep the heart for his own patient, Reid decided to go to Bay City to get it.
As he left Oakdale, Reid finally admitted to Luke that he cared about the people around him, and that he does indeed love Luke.
Reid was on the cell phone to Bay City General, trying to convince them to have the heart ready for him. His car stalled on railroad tracks with a train coming. he struggled and couldn't get out of his safety belt. The show ended with Reid's handsome but frightened face, and the sound of a crash impact.

The previews for next week indicate that Reid survives the initial crash (they show him on a strecher, bloodied, talking to Luke), and then they show Chris, presumably after a transplant has taken place, asking "Whose heart do I have?"

By the way, when Tom and Margo found the Bay City heart, they had actually been looking in Springfield (Guiding Light, may you rest in peace).

Why is it when they are now trying to wrap up storylines, that they have actually done some of their best writing and acting in years? This past week, I have become emotional each day with the high drama and tension. If the powers that be at ATWT had been writing like this all along, the show wouldn't be making it's swan song in 10 short episodes.....

SPOILER ALERT*******SPOILER ALERT*******SPOILER ALERT*****************

I watched the last scene as it was being recorded and reacted the way I do everytime I watch VERTIGO. I knew how it was gonna go down but kept telling myself it wouldn't. Ronboy, your assessment of the writing is spot on for even the 1 1/2 or so years I've been watching ATWT. The old timers have been doing some good work and the writing has been full of emotion. Barbara's wedding was so touching and CZP looked radiant. She and TD have such unexpectedly great chemistry even though I can't quite buy him as a str8 man. The end of show revelation of Nancy's death was shocking. I thought it would be addressed in one of the very last eps. The memorial ep felt rushed. It should have been spaced out over 2 shows IMNTBHO. And today? Well the writers are just evil, that's all(LOL). No sooner does Reid profess his love for Luke than he meets his demise, or finally does this week so "Doogie" can live happily ever after with Bubbles. I guess it's no worse than the insipid s/ls Nuke were given since I've been watching, but damn Reid is such an interesting character and Eric Sheffer Stevens' portrayal has brought a new, fun, WTF kind of energy to Oakdale. Luke has become more adult and less the annoying, clinging, petulant boy.

In the US, As the World Turns will be pre-empted by the lovely, caring folks at CBS on both Monday 6 September, and Friday 10 September.

So we are actually down to the last EIGHT episodes.

I actually follow this guy on youtube who only posts luke and noah scenes, and thats how i followed it,

i am excited for the finale since ive never seen a long running show end.Im half expecting the whole city to just explode or something lol.

but i do think the Nuke storyline can end on opposite sides, they either get back together omg i love you, or... have a huge fight never speak to me again.

we will see

SPOILER ALERT
Just HAVE to say that killing off Reid is the singularly most inept writing on a soap I have ever experienced. I gave up on Nuke after their first lame celibate year but picked it up again having been alerted by AfterElton to Reid's arrival. In the wake of the demise of `Kish' a few months back, watching updates this weekend of all the happy loving straight folks with sunset endings while the gay couple get death & tragedy reaffirms for me how fundamentally cowardly/ homophobic the sponsor company and their writers truly are. Kudos to Eric Sheffer Stevens & Van Hansis for imbuing the shit they were handed with so much engaging dignity. Thank God for Christian & Oliver's wedding joy this weekend on Verboten Liebe to offset the ATWT shame... - and once again unflinching European soaps show up North American soaps !
