If you were going to take someone that had never watched a play, opera, or ballet before what show’s performance would you take them to to make them a theatre lover? Their personality aside, what show do you think could do it?

I think it needs to be something big and grand. A show that has powerful songs and/or impressive staging.

You could play it safe and take them to every tourists favorite show The Lion King.

I think I would start them with a mainstream musical, instead of a play, opera or ballet. It will easier for them to relate to. I always thought Dream Girls is a good first musical.

I agree. Start with a musical. It's easier to follow along than Opera or Ballet. I love Wicked and Les Miserables. The Lion King is good too.

Nice thought out post and excellent choices.

I have got to see everything mentioned, but Mama Mia and Les Miserables. All are very good picks. I do have to say I was a bit disappointed in Phantom of the Opera, but I think it was because I built it up so much in my head.

My overall pick would be “Billy Elliot.” I got to see it on the 7th and it is still playing over and over in my head. :=D::=D:

If I were taking a kid though I would take them to “Beauty and the Beast” over “The Lion King.” I think there was more of a show in “Beauty and the Beast.”

Billy Elliot is phenomenal. That song, "The Letter" gets me everything and the dance sequence just before the intermission was excellently executed.

My personal, personal favourite is the Swan Lake sequence. Enough said, I won't ruin for anyone who hasn't seen it.

"The Letter," "The Letter - Reprise," and "Electricity" really get me.

Also I really enjoyed the fathers singing voice. I have seen a lot of plays and operas and no matter the character they always have a “trained voice.” It was nice to finally hear a voice that fit the character.

It was a great nod to the film. The entire play was truly beautiful.

Classic Broadway.

Like A Chorus Line, Evita, My Fair Lady, and Hello, Dolly.

For the right person, Hair.

I have never got to see any of those. I could have seen "A Chorus Line," but I went to The X-Games instead.

You're right. "Hair" could be a very hit or miss choice.

I'd say Lion King, Wicked, and Spring Awakening.

Wicked because the story is sort of Universal, but adds a great twist to something already known.

Spring Awakening because it;s more of a rock musical, the songs are much more than just entertaining with a great story.

Spring Awakening is my personal favorite play of all time. I think it would be a great choice for anyone into rock music, sexuality, or questioning power in general.
