That darn pope is really throwing the good Catholics in the Republican party into a tissy. Now it may be that Raul Castro is moving towards conversion -- how dare he welcome a sinner into the church!
And today Christie joined the ranks with the crazies in the right wing by saying the pope should stay out of political issues and concentrate on faith. Hmm...when the Affordable Care Act was being debated, weren't the voices of bishops in the Catholic Church regularly sought out by Republicans to bash contraception requirements contained in the act? I seem to remember getting a letter from Cardinal Wuerl in my Sunday bulletin asking that we engage with our elected officials to stand against ACA; even after the Obama administration and Democrats changed language to satisfy their concerns.
Today I was discussing with a Log Cabin Republican at a birthday event and he echoed the remark that Francis should "stay out of politics and talk about spiritual stuff." Since he was Catholic, I asked if he had read Gaudium Et Spes and other documents from Vatican II? How about the Code of Cannon Law as codified under John Paul II? Of course he looked at me as if I was speaking Spanish (which apparently is not to be tolerated in the new GOP) and I gave him a taste of some of the documents. Like I explained to him, "Francis is only calling the church back to action and its roots."
He left mumbling.
It's too bad these "evangelicals" and Catholics aren't so zealous about their actual faith instead of what they want it to be in their minds.
