When we came home from the biweekly bear event our route home was cordoned of.
We had to walk around but we still got home. Our neighbors are not so lucky. I can hear them complaining to the Police through the wall as I type this.

It's not the first time either. The last one in our neighborhood wasn't even a month ago. Earlier this year two people in our block were killed, and the Police shot a man who was making for the windmill across the canal over the drift ice.

How's crime where you live?

The Schawarmas are really really bad. They're poisoning the local population with their out-of-date meat products...

Do you live in one of those wide sprawling blocks of high-density developments in the suburbs of Amsterdam? I remember hearing something about them once - they're rife with unregistered immigrants and druggies and homeless and are even worse than our equivalent which is 'sink estates' of badly-planned 1960s/1970s council high-rises.

No. We're in a cozy deco style neighborhood immediately west of the city center. The neighborhoods your are probably alluding to are on the eastern side of town. Haven't been there since 1999.

So as a typical Amsterdam tourist--I wouldn't venture into these areas?:p

It's basically non existent where we live...but you never know

I thought there is no police in Amsterdam nor a single gun incident. I guess there is no utopian place left anywhere.

I've been in the vicinity of two shootouts in my life. One left two bullet holes in my sister's car, the other left several bullet holes in the wall of my apartment.

Thank God for heavy wooden furniture.

There are some who don't consider meat ready to eat until maggots appear.

Were they twerking?

Oh Katy Perry squirt your cream on my berry...

Amsterdam is so...yesterday.

In the past 15 years we have had two prisons built within 15 mile of my house. Since they were built, we have had an influx of the prisoners families and friends move into the town. Drug related crimes have risen dramatically. In the past several weeks we have had a couple of home invasions (the police think they were drug related and involved people that knew each other, were not random) two elderly people have been robbed while leaving a local drug store, the thieves took just their bags of goods purchased (again the police say drug related, muggers looking for drugs), and the number of cases of sales of drugs has tripled in the past two years. At the store where I work we have had to move our supply of Chore Boy scour pads and our baby formula into our front office and require anyone asking for them to pay for them at the office. Those items were being shoplifted at an alarming rate. The local police told us that the scour pads are used somehow to make meth and the formula is used to cut other drugs. They also have told all the local stores that is only a matter of time before the druggies figure out that they are easy targets for robberies.

Maybe not a shootout, but I heard gunfire while I was visiting a friend up at UC Berkeley. The whole downtown area a few blocks away from campus is not exactly the safest place to catch yourself wandering around. I've had prostitutes approach me in the streets after dark and witnessed drug dealings going on outside my friend's apartment as well.

Amsterdam is famous for its drugs, prostitution and football hooliganism, of course there are police.
Having said this, the Dutch Police are not an integrated whole but consist of a different Corps, who often do things differently and sometimes have conflicting interests.

What geniuses planned those prisons near a residential area?

When I studied at UVA university here in Amsterdam back in 1999, a student stumbled into my faculty with a torn shirt. He had been robbed just outside on the street. Amsterdam has gotten a lot safer since then probably because the addicts from heroin epidemic of the seventies, eighties and nineties either died, kicked their habit or went into some kind of program.

My neighborhood is thoroughly upper-middle class, so if there is any crime it is of the white-collar sort, or some variety of legal but morally dubious chicanery.

^ The properties across our canal are supposed to be worth 2 million euros, which is a hefty price even for Amsterdam.
