These "Cheaper" Macs online

I been noticing a lot of cheaper macs online from 100 to 500 dollars they are older macs. I saw a few on amazon that seem decent but are they legit? The new macs cost too much


I saw mac mini's online and they are upgradeable with pc parts i wonder are they worth buying?

Well if they are being sold on Amazon, I have a Powerbook G4 and I suppose it's considered to be an older Mac. It's not really that great when browsing the Internet, YouTube videos are laggy and I am not sure how the Mac Mini's are with performance.

When it comes to legit if people are selling fake shit on Amazon then I doubt those people would be able to sell fake stuff on Amazon. Also to answer your question they are probably not good enough to upgrade. When I upgraded my RAM from 512MB to 1.5GB of RAM it didn't really improve much just can open more programs without issues, videos are still laggy as fuck. At least I was able to upgrade from Mac OS Tiger to Leopard.

I think you probably might need to pay a bit more money for a decent Mac. If they are really $100 to $500 then they must be extremely hold like the ones that don't even have Mac OS X installed.

Macs retain resale value well above other computer manufacturers. That means that second hand Macs can be surprisingly expensive. The cheaper a second hand Mac is, the more obsolete it probably is.

A $500 Mac Mini might be okay, but unless you're a hobbiest who likes to tinker and/or repair, I'd probably steer clear of anything much cheaper.

Take a look at Apple's Refurbished Macs page. These are machines that have been returned for some reason, fully refurbished and re-offered as new with full warranty. There's a Mac Mini there today for $519.

For the record, I think Mac Minis are awesome little powerhouses for their form factor - perfect for a lounge room media centre, which is what I use mine for. Macs use the same hard drives, RAM and peripherals you use on a Windows machine. Small form-factor machines like Mac Minis are very tightly packaged, and can be a bit fiddly to upgrade, so seek professional assistance if you aren't comfortable with a screwdriver.

I "bought" my brother (he paid but used my Amazon account) a mac for xmas around $700. At least when I was looking, I was looking at under-utilized models that could be expanded with more RAM etc. Reckon the guy I bought it from shipped it about 2 weeks late which was a bit pissy. At least he gave my brother a brand new mouse and keyboard out of the deal.

Not an awesome deal. Only 90 days warranty and fairly low specs. I'd save up a bit longer and buy a new one. Street price of a base model MacBook Air is 900 bucks.

Thanks for the help guys, I will wait for a while before i buy a new mac the refurbished one on apple website left after a few hours. I''m just going to upgrade my gateway and my other current laptops. Mac computers are very expensive. And I'm going to dabble with Linux.

Eww, I would NEVER buy a used laptop even if it is an Apple product. There are so many movable parts that the risk far outweighs the reward.

I just bought a mac mini, and I am very satisfied with it. It's about 600$. But don't buy an Apple display monitor(999$). I bought a samsung, full HDMI monitor for less then 200$.
