Speculation heightened when the studio went quiet and no release date was official. There was talk among industry insiders that there was trouble on the set as Chloe Zhao's vision for the show clashed with production veterans from the original Buffy series.

"Buffy: New Sunnydale" featured an all new cast with an all new "slayer", leaving Sarah Michelle Gellar to play a secondary role despite the name "Buffy" in the title.

And no Joss Whedon involvement. Hulu tried to salvage the pilot but even that result was lacking. Hulu gets to make the call on this reboot and plans to pause and regroup for another pilot can still happen.

That's discouraging about the quality. This has to be done exactly right. I actually hired Dr Strange to use the time stone so I could see the future for this series. I saw 24,000 different timelines and there's only one where the series isn't cringe or a flop. Also I banged Dr Strange cuz Benedict Cummerbund is a total butterface. He looks like a confused meerkat but HE IS BODIED DOWNE.

Buffy veterans on-staff pointed out that you can't use the "Buffy" name without having Buffy in it. There was a bit of a tussle to arrange to have Sarah Michelle Geller appear in a cameo-role in the final minutes of the revised pilot. Buffy fans were stunned to learn that the original plan was to only have an all-new cast, to make a Buffy for a new audience!

There's no telling what could happen from here - maybe even an animated series.

Not sure I'm crazy about the idea of animated Buffy.
