They told me I couldn't donate blood

I went to go donate blood today and they asked me if I had ever had sex with another man. I told them I was gay but have never had anal sex. They told me I was indefinitely disqualified.

I don't understand this clause. I've been very careful about who I've been with (a guy and his bother, and that's it). We kiss, make out, and perform oral, but have never moved into anal sex. And even if we do, we will use condoms.

So does this mean I have gay blood, and am not compatible with straight people?

I searched but that thread didn't pop up! Thanks for sharing it with me :)

I know I'm at less of a risk than some of my straight friends who have been with countless girls, probably some unprotected. I've only been with a guy and his brother (who only had each other before me), who have never done anything other than oral.

Oh well, if they don't want my blood, then screw them!

Sorry I contend that they don't need the blood that bad then.

people lie by the way too...its just as easy to say no i never have been with a man & give them your "gay blood."

Maybe if you answer yes, you did have anal sex with other men, then you would be qualified

and for me, I try to donate once, and they said I can't because I'm Asian! :grrr:

Most agencies that collect blood prohibit any man who has had sex with another man from donating blood and, they usually define sex as contact between mouth and penis, mouth and anus and, penis and anus.

I'm a little more curious about you the bolded portion of your statement...

I didn't know that. Thanks.

I'm in a three-way relationship with a guy and his younger brother.

Supposedly I can't because I lived in the UK in the 80s (mad cow disease) but the local blood bank told me they would "overlook that." I didn't donate, and want family members to give any blood I might need now!

I was going to give blood, but then heard about the "blood ban" and decided they could go fuck themselves. They're always complaining they don't have enough blood and here I am willing to give it to them and they're going to be fussy about my sexual orientation! Well they obviously don't need as much blood as they claim.
Also I'm pretty sure that any blood they were donated would be tested anyway - for safety reasons!

As much as they claim to test donated blood these days, I don't see why the restrictions are even there.

I was declined years ago, just because I had previously contracted mononucleosis.

I know they need to have a 'clean blood source', but turning away potentially acceptable blood is just plain stupid!

I donated plasma for years. I lied about my sexuality because it paid well. I never understood why I would have been blacklisted if they knew I had been with a man. People like my brother has been with many women that he met online just for sex, he didn‘t even ask their names. I know for a fact that my brother stopped using condoms when he turned 20, but yet he was deemed safer than I would had been.

It homophobia wrapped in half assed safety.

Since I have one of the harder blood types to find....they used to call all the time. After I came out, I told them I had had sex with a man and .... no more calls!

The tests are more than capable of allowing gays to donate. As others have said, there is far more risk from those giving -- or selling -- their blood to make it to the next drug deal or liquor store. If they are afraid of HIV and AIDS.... it has more than permeated the hetero culture.

The one thing people don't realize is that the American Red Cross is not a government run agency. It is a private agency. Reckon they do get alot of government funding for what they do, they have the ability to set up their own policies. They would rather not take the risk of 'infected' blood.

Just another un-equality for us being gay!

.........and, we tell the truth; but think of all those who do NOT tell the truth when they go through the "inquisition" prior to giving blood!!!

I say with ALL the many tests done on blood that's donated, surely..........surely the fact that one's gay should just NOT be an issue.

The problem is that hetero's (usually straight men) make up these rules and btw, I forgot to mention the "Christian" theory as well that seems to become a BIG involvement as well.

Sorry, but I will just keep my blood and like someone said previously, the blood-blanks must NOT need/want blood; even though we get news reports on the local TV here that our "privately-run-blood-bank" is just so drastically low on "every" blood type and they are just begging everyone to come in and donate.........NOT!

Hmmmmmm, let's explore this fact a little more in detail.........let's say a whore-mongering, straight-guy who goes out and fucks everything with "skirts" is allowed to give till it hurts; but just by the fact that we're gay........we're tainted in every respect; but especially our blood!

Sorry, I get soooooooo upset over this.....just another hideous violation of our human rights, etc!!!(*8*)

Ooo my thread popped up! O:)

It is pretty dumb but if you won't get in any trouble for lying about your sexual practices I say do it! It might hurt but you could still be saving a life, which is good. ..|

Back when AIDS was still the gay plague, there was a legitimate reason for not accepting 'gay blood'. But now, with the antibody tests that are performed on all donated blood anyway, denying gay men the chance to donate blood is an archaic and discriminatory practice.

It pisses me off something fierce.

Yeah WTF - dont they test "str8' ppl for diseases? I mean really, how many label themselves such and do the deed every other day with a dewd?
