  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

This is disgraceful.

Theirs nothing funny what went down in Japan. People making rude jokes about it isn't helping. Than again people did talk shit about my Father's country Haiti thus no matter how sad something is, people will rag on it. Oh well, no one on this Earth are saints.

It's interesting that when you read some of these people's other posts, they claim to be "Christian." Must be they are not just ignorant of history but also of the religion to which they ascribe. They seem to overlook the central theme was "love" which also requires forgiveness but "forgetness" as well.....

a good 99% of those posters seemed under the age of 30 so can't actually remember Pearl Harbor, but still use it to be hateful,
That's what struck me as odd as well.

The lyrics from "You Have to be Carefully Taught" from South Pacific come to mind, but perhaps that's another thread.

Do people even know what they're talking about when they mention Pearl Harbour? It's not as simple as "Japan randomly bombed us" as everyone seems to be putting it.

Sigh. Idiots will be idiots though.

What the fuck is wrong with those people?

BTW although they are that pathetic, they don't embarass me. Nobody speaks for me or my country. To just accuse a whole country because of these people is downright ignorant.

Every country in the world has its share of assholes and scumbags.

I am done apologizing for people and my country.

I wouldn't ever become an ex-pat just because of them either.

It was just one of MANY reasons I left. I never said that the whole world wasn't full of idiots but the ignorance shown on those 3 pages speaks volumes and makes me glad I left.

To make things clear I do not paint the entire U.S. with that brush. I am just merely pointing this out and that there seems to be a whole lot of ignorance in those posts.

Like I said, every country has its share of assholes. Even Canada. I've travelled enough to know that. There just isn't a perfect country in this world.

Very true. There are even assholes, I'm sure, in New Zealand, the Czech Republic and Poland, Kenya, El Salvador, etc. (I'm mentioning a few places from where, in my interactions with people originating from there, I've found the people to be wonderful to be around!)

The difference is that, here in the USA, hate seems to have become a virulent pandemic, quickly spreading to a frightening degree. This is especially true the past three years, I'd say - ever since it actually started looking possible that somebody of a particular racial group actually had a possibility of becoming the President. I hear a certain vile "demographic" word at least five times as often nowadays as I ever did any other time in my adult life, and I'm not talking about a word that starts with F, either.

If the technology for comments on articles like this had existed 20 years ago, would there have been so many ignorant and downright scary people on there? I really don't think so. See, "20 years ago" was before Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, etc. had become that much of a...[if Bill O'Reilly will excuse me] FACTOR.

And, yes, I've met assholes in Canada as well. But on the rare occasions I'm fortunate enough to be on a Canadian trip, I always feel that I'm in a place more civil[...ised/ized] than what I'm accustomed to.

Well, that's your decision. I guess I just haven't found the reasons for leaving this country. Like I said, every country has its share of assholes. Even Canada. I've travelled enough to know that. There just isn't a perfect country in this world.
Elvin, you shouldn't have to actually travel here to figure that out. Canada does have the internet....lol.

I'm not sure that it is even more of a problem in the States to be honest. I do notice a difference in how other people handle it. Most countries are willing to turn on their own citizens when they're acting like idiots. Americans are more likely to defend their own or say "SHUT UP YOUR COUNTRY HAS THE ASSHOLES" even when they know it is their fellow citizen who is in the wrong. Americans seem more "tribal" to me than people from other countries, which I think is a habit that needs to be broken. Other countries would be more likely to say "Excuse us. He's not playing with a full deck."

We bombed nearly every city of Japan before dropping the nukes on Hiroshima and Naga...

What they did to us at Pearl Harbor doesn't compare.
What happened in '05, also doesn't compare.

I hate America.

What is it about malice that feels so good to some people?

You can't seriously believe there is a major constituent population of Americans who are glad Japan is suffering.

A major constituent ? No.

But, there is a loud minor one who have a rather loud presence in America these days.

There's a sort of network in an echo chamber that exists on AM talk radio and to a lesser extent on Fox "News" that fosters and reassures the radical right in all sorts of ways that distort reality.

It's a myopic, xenophobic point of view that reassures the narrow-minded and anger driven that's it's "America, right or wrong", and no one is going to change their minds.

Hell, there are people in the South who still haven't gotten over the Civil War for God's sake, let alone something as "recent" as Pearl Harbor. The confederate flag is still an image I see on bumper stickers and actual flags almost every day.

This sort of ignorance has always existed, but the difference is the various social networks have allowed the like-minded to gather together. And in numbers there is strength.

I bet you there are a lot of happy people in China too. One guy asked me why America didn't nuke the emperor.

And after the botched bombing of the Glasgow airport, one older American wondered out loud why we haven't nuked Pakistan and turned it into a parking lot.

that being said .. maybe some of you "americans" now get a dose of reality and realize how the "outside" sees you. sarah palin, the tea party, the gay marriage debacle, opposition to wikileaks and the inhumane treatment of manning and yes, even those facebook status updates - all that is supported by a not small amount of US citizens. and yes all this IS being reported by the media here.

Where's your evidence of this? A poll? Have you met a good portion of the 310 million Americans to make such a broad statement?

You're not making unsubstantiated claims again are you?

There just really seems to be an "I hate Americans" vibe on the forums (and across the www in general) sometimes. It's really annoying and disappointing.

Presumably it doesn't surprise you, though.

Take something like Team America: World Police. Of course it was grossly exaggerated satire, but there is some truth in it and that is kinda the general perception of the place. And of course every country has arseholes and idiots, but you guys do seem to give yours a.) significantly more face-time and b.) far too many platforms to be both highly vocal and highly visible on...

How can some Americans be so fucking stupid? You're right, it's embarrassing and disgraceful.
