My neighbours are growing quite the weed garden in front of their house. This photo was taken a few weeks ago and the weeds had grown another half metre and were overhanging about half the sidewalk. (You can see their actual garden hidden behind the weeds near the veranda.)

This afternoon, a city worker came by with a huge gas-powered weed whacker and mowed it all down to the left side of that hydro pole you see there.

Of course, they'll be getting a bill from the city for that one.

If it is anything like here, the homeowners were sent at least a couple of notices to tend to their yard. When that fails, the city takes care of it and the homeowner is billed. If the homeowner does not pay up, the amount is added to their property taxes. We all know what happens if you don't pay your property taxes. Either way, the city gets it's money.

Who wants to live next to a dump? It devalues property and attracts vermin.

I'd be pissed if it were my lawn they cut. Of course, the only reason I'd have for that is so I could obsess over the growth of the weeds and catalog their reproduction.

I like botany go away D:

Being students, they're probably renting the place, and the owner won't know about it until he gets his property tax — after they've fled.

It's the landlord's obligation to keep an eye on his property. Anyone who has ever rented to students know they require more attention than any other.

Isn't yard maintenance the landlord's responsibility anyway?

Hmm... I guess my old landlord was just really generous, then.

There wouldn't have been a problem had they kept the weeds trimmed back so they didn't encroach upon the sidewalk. Seriously, if two people were passing in opposite directions, one would either have to walk through the weeds or step onto the street. I was coming home with my grocery cart the other day and I had to wait for someone to pass.
