I have a question!
Are there many people in the midwest and south of the United States who are mixed with native Americans?
*raises hand*
I'm from Indiana (named as land of Indians - or in today's parlance Native Americans). And yes. There are a great many people here who have Native American ancestry although most don't know much about their heritage because Native American birth records are hard to come by.
Also, it's interesting that you asked about the Midwest and South together because a very large part of the population in the lower Midwest is only one or two generations removed from family in the South, myself included.
I am mostly Irish with Native American mixed (Miami Nation) and some miscellaneous "other" European ancestry.
My dad's family has done a great job of keeping a genealogical history and passing the archive on from generation to generation. My great-grandmother was full-blooded Miami and her home was about an hour from where I live now.
And BTW, however inaccurate it may be to call me an "Indian" instead of "Native American," we grew up with the term Indian and I don't find it offensive in the least. I can't speak for how people from India feel about this. Are they offended by the misuse or not? Don't know.
