Karen, I said FOR 4 thousand years not as of four thousand years. And if you don't know that 6 million jews died in the holocaust less than a century ago and long after slavery then I think it is you who doesn't know what you're talking about. My grandparents were all in concentration camps, of 7 children my grandmother a sister and brother were all that survived. Those that did survive were in labour camps, experimented on, tatooed permanently with a bar code and a number, tortured, starved, beaten, raped.. the list goes on. This was simply the most recent massive extermination of Jews and there were several smaller ones when the various Arab states in the Middle East expelled or executed Jews living in their countries upon the declaration of the state of Israel's independence. Jews are routinely harassed in parts of Europe and Asia, and anti-semitism is extremely open over there. This is all VERY recent and is just the most recent in four thousand years of discrimination and persecution. Read through European history, most authors will tell you that about the only constant in Europe was persecution of the Jews.
Now you tell me that isn't going to have as big of an impact as slavery did and I will never read anything you write again because there would be no sense in it.
Despite that, coming here with nothing but the clothes on their backs literally, both of my sets of grandparents set up moderate lives for themselves and my parents continued the trend and became pretty successful. This despite the fact that as recently as 3 years ago a couple of kids on a birthday celebration decided to spray paint a bunch of houses and cars in my neighborhood with swastikas and racial slurs. I don't hear any Jews using this as justification for jack all.
As for the innate qualities of certain races, no, don't think so. I think certain cultures however have developed over thousands of years to be different from other cultures, I mean that's obvious. Black culture didn't evolve in the US it evolved in Africa. People like to make it seem as though before Europeans arrived in Africa that it was some sort of utopian society of saints but far from it. They were war-like, kept slaves of their own kind and sold their own kind into slavery to whites. None of this had anything to do with white people. I don't think it's a genetic thing, but just as America developed into a culture of gun-toting, Mcdonalds loving, cosumerist people, other cultures can develop their own traits.
There is no doubt that slavery had an impact on Black Americans, but not all Black Americans are even descendants of slaves. I would certainly not expect the newly freed slaves to get on equal footing right away but it has been 150 years since the emancipation proclamation, plenty of time to get on your feet and get going. It's easy to complain about how hard it is, and blame others for the faults of one's society, much easier than actually doing something to change it. Im never a fan of appologists and that's all this is. Do you honestly believe Black America should take zero ownership for the state of their society?
4,000 years ago versus events that happened this century? It makes me keel over in laughter when people suggest black America is in the state it's in because, apparently, we're naturally a bunch of violent, welface leeching misfits who just can't do better.
That's not how it works babe. No one is complaining about slavery but I can't imagine how far up your ass your head has to be to think events that have happened in the past 3, 4 centuries shaped black America. That's common rhetoric from people who don't really know what they're talking about.
