I worked the holidays for years when I worked in TV. And now that I work in retail, I'm still working. What can you do.

The key, of course, is to take charge of the conversation. So we don't say "we work our workers to death". We say "our workers aren't lazy". They're "not afraid of an honest day's work". They're "willing to pitch in to get the job done". And then we don't give them paid holidays or large raises or benefits because "they're not greedy". They're "not looking for a handout" nor are they "looking for something for nothing". This not only quells the arguing, but makes them actually proud of their status.

Rightous? Ouch. I just think people should be given the choice. Go talk to a Walmart worker, or a Kmart worker, and see if they are given the choice. I have and most aren't.

I guess I should've said they're being SELECTIVELY righteous. They're bravely stating they will NEVER set foot into WalMart or Target...on Thanksgiving. (Hey, way to take a stand.) But they usually have no trouble going to the grocery store, or McDonald's, on Thanksgiving.

I was thinking the same thing! I remember a friend of mine who moved to the USA through marriage with his is Scottish wife (nurse). We was a truck driver/mechanic in England so he applied and was hired at my company. A real cool guy but he couldn't get over how many hours 7/24/365 days a yr were required in the USA. "In England a heavy transport driver would never world these ungodly hours" , "Unspeakable the hours you yanks work", "1 bloody fucking day off a week after working 75 hrs?, "I have to be here a bloody yr before I get 6 fucking paid holidays?", "Christ sake don't even shut down for a few fucking hours on Christmas eve!!!" etc..............

Yeah I can imagine it would be pretty tough on any European truck drives heading to the states now we have the Working Time Directive. Thank fuck we in the UK were forced to sign up, despite all the claims it would destroy our economy! Personally I have come to mind that the working week should be set at about 30/35 hours a week maximum, if anything because it increases productivity.

If one does not want to work on a holiday they should go in to a line of work that does not require it.
I listened to my fellow workers bitch for years because we only got 6 paid days off, only got two weeks vacation,hell, school teachers got "all summer".
My reply was "become a school teacher".
If one doesn't like it where they are at, move on.
I always say thanks to those in the service industry, every time I deal with them, today a check out clerk at Wal Mart complained to me about having to work on Thanksgiving, I replied that I was not making her work, that store will not see me on that day.

I am amazed at the number of people I have met who use an excuse like "it doesn't matter, both sides are alike" for not voting.
I have found that they are the same ones who want to complain about their job, pay, hours and benefits.

When I saw the middle class coming under attack I wrote letters, ran for office, addressed congressman Sander Levin in front of a crowd of over 500 people.

Everyone told me that "things would be fine", that service based jobs would replace the old manufacturing jobs, it was "just a shift"
Well, how has that worked out?

We now have the "working poor" working on Thanksgiving day, not to far in our past these folks would have had the day off with pay,
but the worker(s) took their eye off of the ball, the capitalists did as they always do, they took advantage of the worker.

Some times people get what they deserve, if one is uninvolved and doesn't even vote, how can they complain?

^ Aggreed. A decent job used to be a right, now it's a privilege. College means nothing, but working 24/7/365 for $8.50/hour with no benefits might land you a McJob. I really do pitty today's youth. They have been sold a bill of goods.

You are all being heavily ironic, aren't you? Is this Thanksgiving lark really such a big part of anybody's life? In the UK Thanksgiving is meaningless and what baffles us about it--or baffles me anyway--is that everyone seems to spend the day having blazing rows with relatives they can't stand the sight of, then they to go through the whole rigmarole again four weeks later with added tinsel. Why bother? Who is forcing you to do it?

If I worked in America I'd jump at the chance to work over Thanksgiving. I'd laugh at the natives who felt sorry for me having to work and gloat over the poor suckers holed up with their cousins and their aunts and feeling bloated with turkey. Enjoy!

Nothing comes easy, I have had jobs that sucked. I didn't have them too long, sometimes it was a temporary thing until I found something better.

I know that things are rough, I don't mean to make it sound easy to move on, but I have never complained to a customer about my boss, that's not why they are in front of me.

If one takes a job they should apply their selves, it will be good practice for when they get a job that they like.

Speaking only for myself, and in necessarily vague terms, it was a very strong weekend and a significant sales increase. A brief review of the numbers indicated that the early Thanksgiving opening was especially strong--more of the sales were shifted into Thursday and in fact there was a very slight decrease on Friday. It looks like the people went for the bargains after they had their dinner. This is my personal observation based on what I know. I did hear that it wasn't as successful in other areas of the country, although I don't know quite where.

I didn't take the time to look at the weekend (Sat/Sun) numbers, I was too busy mopping up from the insane weekend. Although I did hear we had a very good weekend too--there were reports of cheers from the office at the 4:00 Sales Manager meeting.

There will be early Thanksgiving openings next year, for sure.

I use to volunteer to work on holidays for two reasons. 1) I was the boss in my sections so I thought it would be nice to let the rest my my crew have it off. 2) I got paid double time and a quarter of my regular pay, which was pretty good to begin with.

Key word is "looks" - turkey sucks, stuffing isn't my thing and I outgrew that cranberry sauce jello thing.
