Are they a good buy to save a bit or do they quit working quicker?

Thoughts please.

I am not a fan or refurbished products.

Generally I don't feel they give you enough of a discount to make it worth the risk. I usually see them at 10 - 20% off - about the same price you can get the computer for on sale if you just wait a few weeks.

Some are fine - they know exactly what the problem is and they replace the part. But often they just do a factory reset and think everything is fine.

That is kind of my thought as well, but my brother and others I have talked to say they are a good deal. Personally I have always bought all my tech new.

Make sure the battery's life is still good or can be replaced.

... say they are a good deal...

Maybe up front, but I tend to keep electronics a long time and normally wouldn't take the risk if the price is close and the equipment comparable. My favorite computer (of the three in this room), the one I use every day, is over six years old, was damaged by lightning, and had a hard drive fail (prior to the lightening). Planning for its eventual demise, I bought a refurbished backup pc for maybe a 7th of the replacement cost. It's a fairly old model, but the specs are much better than what I could buy new at a reasonable price.

When I've shopped for computers, I check the specs for various older models -- readily available online (e.g. "Dell Optiplex models") -- to make sure the memory type and other replaceable parts are close to current standards. My last purchase needed only some extra memory. Be sure to check the maximum memory it can take, which can be very little on an older computer.

Oh God no no never again. A friend of a friend gave me theirs as they were getting a new one. Fucking thing was loaded with Porn, lets leave it there! I took a sledge hammer to that fucker so goddamn fast literally after it was booted up and I was going through it saw what was on it went to the garage and smashed it into literally a million pieces dismantled the entire thing ripped apart every piece smashed resmashed them, vacuumed some of the very small pieces up, burned some, threw some in a river, various dumpsters and scrap heaps. I was 19 & scared which is why I never went to the cops as I didn't even know the guys last name or where he lived; heard years later he left the country. Thank you you MISERABLE FUCK!

I am talking from the factory so I would think it would be 100% clean of such things.

You're fine if you grab them from a reputable seller. I've had a refurbished laptop off eBay and it was great.

I had one that lasted years, bought it via Staples website. I can't remember, i believed it lasted 6 years for me.
