"THRILLER", is it really the greatest album ever made?

buff... Michael Jackson? Madonna? Alanis? (sorry Crashy) [-X

Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Queen, Yes, Bob Dylan, Guns N' Roses, Miles Davis, Janis Joplin... All of them (and many more) could have the greatest (not the best selling) album ever.

Ah, Thriller only has "Beat It". Eddie Van Halen was incredible there...

I'm not sure " the greatest album ever made" should have been the question. Cause that's an opinion. Is Thriller really the biggest selling album of all time?

Yep, it sold 40-something million copies worldwide.

In the US it's the 2nd best, next to The Eagle's Greatest Hits :)

I've often said that arguing over the best album, song, artist...is like arguing over what the best color is. You'll never get any concensus. That said...

Thriller is a fantastic album. All killer, no filler, if you will. Even the two songs that weren't released as singles hold up very well. Off the Wall I think has a couple better songs on it, but also has some less-than-stellar moments. Bad also has some good stuff, but it's got a REALLY slow stretch in the middle...

Like a Virgin? Enh, it's OK. There's some moments on there that I'm not fond of (isn't "Shoo Be Doo" on that one?) and I don't even think "Angel" has aged all that great. If I were gonna nominate a Madonna album to put into the Hall of Fame, it'd be Like a Prayer, where she managed to be catchy, fun, AND adventerous. Quite a feat.

But Roy's right. Songs in the Key of Life crushes everything in MJ and Madonna's catalog like a grape. :)

I agree with Sean Penn - Ray Of Light is Madonnas Best Album. Not to say that the others are crap. But it really seems to be the apex of her carrer.."..dancefloor" was pretty good too.

As for best album..i can't answer that..in different periods of my life..different albums are the best. Ones that I couldn't take out of the CD Player, and ones that I go back to and still enjoy. Barenaked Ladies - Gordon, Emma Bunton - Emma. And with Madonna,(or others) regarding best songs...I have to look at her in different phases. Especially if they have put out music for more than 20 years. Something that is great in the 80s...should it be trumped by the great from the 90s?? or the 00s.

Personally, I don't think it is. For me, the best album ever made is Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette.
