TIME's breastfeeding mother cover deemed controversial and inappropriate

Do you think this kid will grow up to be a bully? Something about that teet sucking at that age tells me he will need his mommy's teet in high school too.

SPIN magazine listed the top 100 guitarists of all time in a recent issue. At number 100 - Skrillex, the dubstep artist who as far as I can ascertain has never played a guitar in his life. Why? For the same reason Time chose this photo to be the cover.

Lex

:rotflmao: @ skrillex. i swear these new artists are comedy because they suck that bad. the whole dubstep movement is TRASH. it's the same beat with a similar sounding melody and somehow there's a shitload of people outthere acting like it's hot. people must be bored with life.

but seriously, there are psychological development stages he's going through that could be really bollocksed up by still having this connection with his mother.

I cry for the woman who marries him as she'll never live up to 'mommy'.

He's like a white version of P. Diddy that shoves a "WUB -WUB -WUB" effect in every song.

Possible psychological implications aside, I'm severely disappointed by the lack of 'Game of Thrones' references in this thread.

Oh and by the way, asserting that Skrillex completely monopolises the dubstep genre is nothing short of ignorant. I'm listening to this as we speak...

I guess I must be 'bored with life'.

pretty much. all those sound effects and screeching synthesizers he uses with those weird drum patterns are mind numbing. dubstep is made for people without any form of rhythm.

yep, after listening to this 3 seconds, yep you really are bored with life.

"I don't like the music you like, therefore you are bored with life". How childish.

My post was to demonstrate that the genre 'dubstep' describes a broad spectrum of musical / compositional styles; not exclusively harsh and abrasive mechanical screeching with a drop at the :55 second mark (32 measures at the 140bpm tempo - yes, dubstep does have rhythm - only a rhythmically challenged individual himself would not recognise this).

You're basing your opinion of an entire genre of music on the style of a single commercially successful artist. It is no better than claiming that rap sucks because what you hear on the radio is chauvinistic and superficial.

Open your mind.

Edit: It just occurred to me that this discussion is wildly off-topic, so I would ask that if you wish for it to continue, you do so via PM.

BTW- that's Trance, not Dubstep.

What's the difference between Trance and Dubstep? Example please.

BTW- that's Trance, not Dubstep.

False. It's a dubstep remix of a trance track.

HunterM, this is the (original) trance version

And this is dubstep (re-posted from above)

The most notable (and most easily identifiable) difference is the bpm (beats per minute).

On the photo: Personally, I'm a little uncomfortable because the staging of it seems exploitative. The World Health Organization recommends breast feeding until 2 years, because in most of the developing world water sanitation isn't what it should be to make formula and baby food safe for infants - who are very susceptible to water borne bacteria and parasites. But there's no real reason to continue it on, in the US, after that. However, it's not my child.

But mostly I agree with thatgirl - this photo isn't about breastfeeding, it's about our culture. Mothers are stacked against each other in ideological cage fights - tiger moms vs. attachment parents vs. working moms vs. stay at home moms vs. moms who let their kids watch tv vs. moms who homeschool - any available choice a woman makes about her children will be scrutinized and judged. It's another way women are discouraged from having solidarity with each other in our patriarchal society, and women throw themselves in it wholeheartedly.

On Skrillex: Before Skrillex was the master of all things glitchy and screechy and dubsteppy, he was a little fellow named Sonny Moore who played in a fairly competent metalcore band named From First To Last. They were in that same Warped Tour circle of influence with bands like Fall Out Boy & My Chemical Romance. And while little Sonny was a decent guitarist for his age and his millieu, 100 Best? I am dubious.

Edited to Add: How did I miss the hedgehog gif? Squeee!

I'm confused that so many people buy into the "dubstep is the sound of Transformers fucking" thing. It's OK if you don't like it. But to trash it and say it isn't "real music"...you do know you sound like parents, right? :)

If you thought it could not get any worse...........

Stella Onions breastfed her kids til they were 6

The woman in this article breastfed her children until they were 6, if you can believe the story. She said they kept asking for mummy milk.
Children don't willingly give up the breast, normally. It is a comforting, intimate, bonding thing for the child and not just about nourishment. But it is called weaning for a reason. The mother deliberately and gradually ceases breastfeeding to encourage other forms of food intake. If you have ever seen a cat or dog with kittens or puppies, you know that the little ones don't want to be weaned, but Mom knows it is for their own good.

I agree with Blackbeltninja when he called the woman on the cover of the magazine a hippie and I agree with HardUp1 about the photo being posed for shock by the way they had mother and son dressed. They sexualized them by doing this.
The photo of the mother nursing her two children did not disturb me because the children seemed so young.

And Anders, behave yourself!! STay on topic or no milk for you.

I had so much laugh in this thread :rotflmao: the hijacking process is really pro :p

offtopic: I still think it's up to the mother to breastfeed. And as the comparison between photos, yes I agree it's for the C-rated shock purpose (I invented that term up =P) but beyond that serves no absolute truth or false. It's an ethical issue whatsoever.

And Dan, I don't know you have hyperprolactinaemia  You can sell it as the very first male breast milk, specialised for gay male babies :p

Ah...I get it now. Dubstep is more mellow. So, trance is for the ecstasy crowd. Dubstep is for the stoner crowd.

Guys, I think Refugi is correct. Most stoners I know have no form or rythm!

that's one big ass pot belly rotund 4 yr old I thought the kid was like 6 or so on way to becoming the poster boy for the next Pillsbury dough boy.
