Isn't it the best dessert in the world. I'm really not into Italian food, but this dessert just makes me go crazy.

Tonight I'm having some tiramisu, made from scratch, with a glass of red wine, and it's heavenly good.

Do you agree???

Yes, and did you bring enough for everyone?

Actually, the best DESERT in the world is the Atacama.

There's some places in that desert where rain has never been recorded in history. That desert really has its act together. LOL

(I'll have to look up what tiramisu is, I'm not at all familiar...)

lol sorry spelling, brain in coma from good tastiness!

I love tiramisu. I make it myself and it's damned good. Sometimes I bring a large batch to a potluck and it is always the first dessert to go.

I love it. It's one of my fav desserts.

I love it. I found a great recipe for it, the only thing that sucks is that mascarpone cheese is expensive and hard to find, but I tried a substitute once and it was not nearly as good. Lady fingers are hard to find too, but angel food cake is a good substitute. The using Nilla Wafer recipe sucks too.

I haven't had Tiramisu in a LONG while. Regardless, very delicious treat.

Fortunately where I live all the key ingredients are easy to obtain. Yeah, marscapone is expensive, like $5 for an 8 oz tub which is enough for only 4 servings. Our stores also have the right kind of Italian lady fingers which don't cost too much. I couldn't imagine substituting with angel food, it seems too spongy and would be too soggy. Italian Ladyfingers are crispy and absorb just enough moisture to become spongy but not soggy. Alcohol is also an important ingredient. I use marsala.

I'm ashamed to say that I've never tried tiramisu because I'm half Italian. I have never been big on dessert,
What I particularly like about tiramisu is that it is not very sweet. It's big flavor comes from the coffee, liqueur, heavy cream, and marscapone. Some people dust it with chocolate to add a little bit of sweetness.

it is better to have it with a doppio espresso or a snifter of the rum used in it. it is the best though.

I agree! Most amazing cake everrrrrrrr!! As a sidenote, be aware that the ones you buy are NEVER as good as home made tiramisu ;-)

I know about the rum, I just don't keep hard alcohol in the house. I don't drink espresso either, red wine was the next best thing. :)-

I'm not a dessert person either I prefer savory. But tiramisu is so damn good!

This was bought at a local shop where all the foods are prepared from scratch using local and sustainable ingredients. :)

The way I remember lady fingers are hard and stale. The ones I bought at an expensive supermarket, where I asked for them at the bakery section because I could not find them were soft, refrigerated and similar in texture to sponge cake. In order for them not to get soggy you drizzle the espresso on them instead of soaking it.

The recipe I used called for brandy. The closest thing I had was Remi Martin (Cognac) and it tasted amazing with it. It went in both the espresso and mascarpone filling.

What I particularly like about tiramisu is that it is not very sweet. It's big flavor comes from the coffee, liqueur, heavy cream, and marscapone. Some people dust it with chocolate to add a little bit of sweetness.

I dust mine, (both layers, sometimes 3) with cocoa powder and shaved semi-sweet chocolate.

I'd try it, but being partly cheese chances are I wouldn't care for it all that much. And contrary to Spiff's comments in #13, I'd probably dust on 100% chocolate which would not add sweetness at all, LOL.

Mascarpone is a very light, mild cheese. It's mixed with egg yolks, heavy whipped cream, and beaten egg whites (according to my recipe, but my egg whites did not rise and I used Cool Whip instead :p) to form a custard or pudding like consistency. It's not very cheesy. You also have coffee, liqueur and chocolate flavors involved.

All you need to make Mascarpone is heavy cream and tartaric acid, or lemon juice. It's not a simple process, but that is all the ingredients. You then have to heat it to a certain temperature in a double boiler and strain it through cheesecloth.

Tiramisu doesn't taste cheesy even though it uses mascarpone. Nor it is as sweet as other usual cakes. The texture is more creamy and the sweetness is light. The strongest aroma comes from the coffee and the alcohol inside it.

I absolutely love it; I consider it the king of desserts. It's expensive here, but there is a bakery here which makes tiramisu in cup with a rather affordable price and delicious, rich taste (albeit not as good as the tart forms since they don't use alcohols). I indulge myself with that most of the time. :)

And what a blasphemy to not include a pic after so many replies!
