'Tis The Season

I did enjoy christmas one (1) year.
The day before, I was wandering about, not wanting to go home, dreading what the next day would be like there, when I met a boy from school who said come back and listen to some records. So we did, in his tiny room, until very late, until he said stop here if you want. Yes I want. No naughtyness took place, not that I would have said no, probs due to lack of alcohol, which in that town, was a biological necessary. The great thing was, next morning, his parents never even questioned who I was or what I was doing in their house, just insisted that I stay for christmas dinner with them. So for one day I found out what it was like to be in a non dysfunctional family. Unforgetable. Such wonderful people.

Christmas became special to me after making friends with people of different faiths and different traditions.

In 2018 I was fascinated by the Story of the Yule Lads of Iceland - a PBS Special hosted by Icelandic poet, Jóhannes úr Kötlum.

Nestle's was shopping around for a mascot to appear in a new ad campaign beginning in 1955.

Jimmy Nelson auditioned for Nestle's executives with his puppet dog, "Farfel". Jimmy was so nervous during the audition that his finger slipped while Farfel sang the word, "chocolate".
The sound of the puppet's wooden mouth closing was a surprise, and the executives in attendance all agreed that the sound was memorable and hired Jimmy and Farfel, with the mouth sound.

Farfel was the Nestle's mascot from 1955 to 1965, being replaced by the Nesquik Bunny in the 1970's.

Jimmy and Farfel came out of retirement in 1992 to promote special "Holiday Editions" of Nestle's chocolates - a final appearance for the generation that knew, and loved them both.

Well, if you want to make Christmas shopping a snap - take the Toonerville Trolley.

Settle down with a bottle of sherry and a plate of mince pies and for the next 80 minutes be entertained by one of the most entertaining literary scholars you've ever been entertained by.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL
