...discovered we both are about to start our masters degrees and spent some time debating the pro’s and con’s of the educational system.

As much as there's exceptions to the rule, I'm pretty sure most homophobes meet their first gay when they step into their undergrad campus. And I'm being generous there.

possible. also possible that he already had other gays around him. he maybe was just able to "spot" them right away, or knew from the start and could stay away from them, whatever. the story still might be fake, but that detail certainly is no solid clue ..
