The concept of Stockholm syndrome is in dispute. It was a characterization created by the media, after hostages criticized the actions of police as putting them in more danger than the hostage-takers. It is not included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, and has been criticized as a diagnosis usually made by the media, not by psychologists or psychiatrists.
