On July 20, 1944, a group of German military officers attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler
in a plot known as the "20th of July plot" or "Operation Valkyrie".
The assassination attempt, which involved a bomb placed by Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg,
sadly failed to kill Hitler, but led to widespread arrests and executions of those involved in the plot and their associates.

Today we remember Jean Charles de Menezes, murdered by police twenty years ago in London.
They were looking for Middle Eastern terrorists. Jean was from Brazil, a country quite some distance away from where the terrorists were from, and not guilty of anything at all. But he was obviously guilty because he had "Mongolian Eyes". That was enough evidence to shoot a man.
The cover up started the minute the gunfire stopped. Lies, lies, more lies. Top cop Ian Blair falsified enough evidence to send himself to prison, instead he became Sir Ian Blair. The establishment closes ranks.
Today is a day to be be remembered with shame and disgust.

1148: Too weak to retake Edessa from the Muslims, the armies of the Second Crusade besiege Damascus. They blundered and were forced to retreat within five days. Believers throughout Christendom were shocked and devastated that a crusade preached by a moral exemplar (Bernard of Clairvaux) and led by royalty (King Louis VII of France and Emperor Conrad III of Germany) would fail.

And under weird things people believe--

1727: Moody, stiff young preacher Jonathan Edwards marries Sarah Pierrepont, a lively 17-year-old. The union proved happy and produced 11 children, six of who were born on Sundays. This caused a bit of a scandal, because people then believed children were born the same weekday they were conceived.

1945: a B-25 bomber crashes into the 79th floor of the Empire State Building, killing 14 and injuring 24. Unable to land at LaGuardia due to heavy fog, the pilot requsted to divert to Newark Metropolitan Airport in New Jersey. Becoming disoriented, the pilot turned the aircraft to avoid the Chrysler Building; but, his turn put him on a direct path to the Empire State Building.
