Thanks for the link. I just finished reading about Charlotte and her daughter--difficult, mediocre and inestimable women and their unhappy lives, women we would never bother to be interested in were it not for the accident of their royal births, marriages and prominent relatives. I then had the shuddering realization that Meghan Markle, another difficult, mediocre and inestimable woman, will be similarly chronicled in the future...

1897: Pope Leo XIII issues the encyclical Militantis Ecclesiae, which describes Protestantism as the "Lutheran rebellion, whose evil virus goes wandering about in almost all nations"

OMG, yet another Anglocentric thread.

1100: William the Conqueror's son and successor Rufus, a wicked king who delighted in torture, seizing church property, and blasphemy, is mysteriously killed while hunting by an arrow that flew out of nowhere. No one mourned, and England took his eternal damnation for granted.

I probably shouldn't mention this; but, in 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail from Palos, Spain to find a Western sea route to India - along the way, he ran into the continents of North and South America, or rather some of their outling islands

Heh -- I had mine written out; I'm going to add it here anyway as it has a different emphasis:

1492: Christopher Columbus sets sail from Spain for the "Indies." Though the explorer was in part driven by a quest for gold and glory, he also saw himself as a missionary. He thought, if there were a shortcut to the East by sea, missionaries could be sent there faster, thus enabling Christians to meet the provision for world evangelization before the Lord could return. This religious aspect played a part in persuading the Catholic monarchs to fund the expedition. Ironically, they didn't have enough money, but an extremely wealthy Jew who wanted out of Spain due to the shenanigans of the Inquisition made a deal: he and his family could take all their movable possessions and leave the country in safety in return for him paying for Columbus' venture. The deal included Columbus taking some of the benefactor's relatives on the voyage, saving them as well from the Inquisition. These were merchants who had been to India and China and thus in Columbus' eyes would have been useful even if not pressed on him.

Just BTW, concerning his ancestry--

One of the strongest indications of his Portuguese ancestry is his naming of Cuba, the only other place with that name is in Portugal, and many of the place names in and around Cuba (the island in the Caribbean) have the same names as places close to Cuba (Portugal). The supposition is that it’s his birthplace - in the event you’re wondering, Cuba (Portugal) is located here:

Yes, you’ve never heard of the place, and in 1492, no one else had, either. That’s why it’s suspected as his birthplace.

A Portuguese heritage would help explain why apparently the Portuguese king was informed about the results of the voyage before his Spanish sponsors.

^ I so loved how she appeared in that picture... shame it wasn't finished, and so revolting she (and Cukor, and all the rest) got through all that hell behind that splendorous appearance. Hollywood, Hollywood!
