For several years in the 1990s I read everything written by Hermann Hesse that I could get my hands on. His novels concentrated on the struggle of individuals to be their authentic selves in the face of hostile society. His most famous works were probably Demian, Steppenwolf, and Siddhartha, which was the work which earned Hesse the Nobel Prize.
