Like John Wayne, you have to keep reminding yourself that you're watching a character being played by Tom Cruise. John Wayne couldn't play anyone except John Wayne. Tom Cruise can only play Tom Cruise.

In comparison, Philip Seymour Hoffman can play any character and you have to keep reminding yourself that the character you're watching is Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Philip is one of those rare actors who causes you to do a double take to be certain it is really him on the screen. Peter Ustinov had that talent as well.

When you have to read the credits to know who an actor was, you know you have watched a real actor.

Just my own humble opinion, but I would be interested to read other people's opinions.
 
Nothing wrong with these actors who do have a limited range,or seem to have this persona they cannot elude no matter what they're cast in.But it does go to show that character actors are sorely unappreciated.They don't usually pull in the big bucks,make the tabloid headlines and are rarely sexy but they really do get into the heart of a character more than most lead actor types.
 
Generally I agree, Cruise rarely does a stretch. But I watched Tropic Thunder last night and it took me a few minutes to realize that the sleazy studio owner was Cruise. I didn't know much about the movie in advance.

In the trailer for his new movie Valkyrie, he just looks seems like Tom Cruise with an eye patch.
 
Tom Cruise's acting ability is limited by the lesser amount of body thetans he has, due to his extreme devotion to ridding his body of such entities through silent birth and blinding giving away lots of his money to L. Ron. He simply does not have enough of what causes emotion to act with any.

One of the reasons I wanted to see 'Tropic Thunder' so bad was because I heard Tom Cruise was hilarious in it. But man was I disappointed! Watching him trying so hard (and failing) to be funny was so painful, it nearly ruined the entire film for me.
 
Does anybody remember his outstanding performances in "Magnolia" and "Born on the 4th of July"?
 
The same could be said about Cary Grant.

The difference between them is that Grant was self-deprecating and avoided the limelight, while Cruise is a self-promoting asshat.

While you may have thought him terrible I thought he was hilarious in Tropic. He actually was the only really funny thing in that film for me.

And yes, he has given some performances that were lackluster but he has also done some dynamite work as mentioned in Magnolia and Born on the 4th of July. I loved him in Rainman and in many other films.

A star does not have to be just a persona. He /she can also be an actor and a star. Tom fits that bill. Say what you want/will about Tom, but few have drawn the crowds to theaters as he has. His Risky Business was a star turn that led to the incredibly popular Top Gun.

Lastly, name me a star who has always been consistently good in every film. Not even Meryl Streep can claim she was magnificent in every film, and neither, might I add can Seymore Hoffman, whose performances sometimes grates my nerves. He was great in Capote but not everything there after. Sorry.

While Tom Cruise isn't the best actor ever he's certainly taken a wide variety of roles. Maverick and Jerry MacGuire are far from the same character. Moreover though...

You clearly have no clue what you're talking about in reference to John Wayne. John Wayne was a man named Marion who had a fear of horses and become known as one of the toughest cowboys in the history of American film. John Wayne always playing "John Wayne" had nothing to do with his abilities and everything to do withe studio system of early Hollywood in which Charlie Chaplin had to play Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Munroe had to play Marilyn Munroe. The studio system of old Hollywood system viewed stars as interchangable parts in the machine and simply type cast everyone because that's the way movies were made. It made it much simpler for film goers to know exactly what to expect and to pull in the proper audiences
 
i expect I have missed cruise's "stretchiest" roles. For instance, I haven't seen "Eyes Wide Shut" or "Magnolia."

But I hold his scientology freakishness against him so strongly I become less and less willing to watch him at all.
 
tom cruise is a nutjob that cant act. he gives his money away to the other money hungry scaming nutjobs. he should really stop acting.
 
Tom Cruise just became a richer movie mogul now that he owns United Artists.

He's not the greatest actor. I think his best roles have been in the past, Risky Business, Top Gun, Born on the 4th of July, Rainman, and Jerry Maguire.
