Tonsillectomy

Sorry to hear you are in a lot of pain. I had a friend that had hers out when she was 25. she ate a lot of popsicles. The cool water from the melting popsicle gave her some relief. If I lived closer I would go and get you some.

I know is sucks but hang in there and it will start to get better soon.

Best wishes.

Grumps

I can't wait to hear about the constipation caused by the codeine.

Eww, I don't like codeine. Makes my skin itch like a heroin addict.

Ask for hydrocodone, if they'll prescribe it.

Feel better hun!

Antares: Ask your surgeon or your internal medicine doc for another painkiller if the Tylenol w/codeine isn't helping you. Most people find codeine (and all narcotics) constipating so you might want to take a laxative and/or a stool softener while you're on it.

It's very important to drink nourishing fluids while you're recovering so your throat heals well. Clear broth, milk, and Ensure are good bets. When you think you can handle it, move up to yogurt, pudding, etc. Avoid soda or anything carbonated or acidic.

I know it's hard, but the more you swallow, the faster you'll heal. Rest a lot and in a couple of weeks you'll be back to your old self.

Thanks for the update. My surgery is on Tuesday and by reading your post I'm already thinking about cancelling it! Haha.

I'm sure it'll be totally worth it when I can get a full night's sleep, though. Keep us updated!

i had my tonsils out recently, and they gave me croissants for breakfast the next day. im not going to say it doesn't hurt, it does, but dont worry, the mouth is probably the quickest part of your body to heal. It is not too painful either, i actually found it less painful then having a tonsil infection in the first place, and that lasts longer anyway. Try not to stress about it too much as the human mind cannot remember pain, give it a week after, and you will remember you were in pain, but you wont be able to remember how it felt.

The thing about pain is that it's more difficult to control once you start to feel it.

The trick is therefore to start taking the prescribed medication before the anesthetic wears off and keep taking it at the prescribed regular intervals, even if it means setting an alarm clock at night. You don't wait to feel any pain.

What I do when the prescribed pain killer doesn't seem to be enough, is to combine it with a second pain killer that is compatible with the first one. Typically the main medication is Tylenol to take every 4 hours and which is filtered by the liver, so I take Ibuprofen (kidney) after the first two hours and every 4 hours. Don't ever take more than the prescribed dose of either and once you don't feel pain, stick to the prescribed routine.

Good luck with your surgery!

Actually, the pain three days out is probably not from the breathing tube (that normally lasts 24-48 hours). It is more likely from the tonsil surgery. Just fyi. Esp regarding the pain with yawning... that's not the tube.

*nods in agreement*

The most common method of inserting a breathing tube during tonsillectomy is through the nose instead of the mouth.

you know. I don't think Antaries probably cares where the tube was stuck well he was out. I think he cares more about the fact that he wants it to get better ASAP! :D

LOL

Agreed. My point is that I didn't want Antares to dismiss the pain as being from the breathing tube. While 5 on a 10 scale is probably a normal post-operative pain level for 3 days after surgery, he's described the pain as "excrutiating" while he's on 2 Tylenol #3 every 4 hours. I think he needs to call the doctor because he's going to run out of pain medicine pretty soon... :-)

I had mine taken out this morning and my throat is sore. It's more of a nagging pain but so far I'm making it. Keep me updated so I'll know what to expect. The doc told me this morning that days 3-7 are the worse so let me know.

Did you have your adenoids taken out as well? Most of my pain is coming from where the adenoids were. I'm also having a lot of phlegm and blood.

In terms of food, I haven't had many problems eating as long as the bites were small. The nurse told me right before I was discharged that I could eat anything I felt like so I ate a pork chop last night (day of surgery) and had an Arby's roast beef sandwich tonight. Other than that I've stuck with soft foods or soups.

My medicine apparently makes me sleepy. I've slept all day yesterday and today and, believe it or not, I'm not liking all of this sleep. I sleep for 5-6 hours, wake up for about 2 hours and then sleep 5-6 more hours.

I have. I was around 8 years old. Don't remember much but the sleeping mask before surgery and then puking up black crap about 30 mins after I came out of the sleep. Yup....right on my mom too. Poor girl! :)

I'm taking a liquid hydrocodone (2-3 teaspoons every 4 hours) that I gargle and then swallow. It pretty much numbs my throat and my tongue if I get it on there. Also, I'm taking Amoxicillin 250mg for my antibiotic (one teaspoon, twice daily). The only thing I don't like about the hydrocodone is that is totally zaps my energy. I went to a friend's house earlier to watch a movie and wound up dozing off. But I'll do anything to not feel the pain!

I feel it everytime I swallow. I just don't have any pain between swallows. It's a whole lot better as long as I keep my throat wet. I've always got a bottle of water with me--even while I'm sleeping-- to keep my throat moist.

I seem to be in the same boat - after years of tonsillitis 5 times a year min i am gettin them yanked which at MY age is a bit of a laugh
i have noted though it is does seem to be the general trend now days and the criteria arent always met namely

1.)Experiences frequent bouts of acute tonsillitis. The number requiring tonsillectomy varies with the severity of the episodes. One case, even severe, is generally not enough for most surgeons to decide tonsillectomy is necessary.
2.)Has chronic tonsillitis, consisting of persistent, moderate-to-severe throat pain.
3.)Has multiple bouts of peritonsillar abscess.
4.)Has sleep apnea (stopping or obstructing breathing at night due to enlarged tonsils or adenoids)
5.)Difficulty eating or swallowing due to enlarged tonsils

it is under general not local (gawd can u imagine) and the major issues is post op bleeding (adults have about a 2% increased risk) and keep urself HYDRATED cause post op it decreases pain in ur throat - i CANT WAIT to get mine out
:)

Wow, that sucks dude. Apparently I was bragging about my eating situation a little too early because I sat down to eat dinner tonight and I couldn't open my mouth up enough to get the food between my teeth. I had a sharp pain shooting through my lower jaw. So instead of eating a plate full of spaghetti, I got to eat chicken soup through a straw. Fun stuff.

This could possibly be the next Hollywood fab diet. I've lost 3 pounds since Tuesday morning already. I'm gonna be so HAWT when I heal! lol.

It's day 4 for me and the pain started getting more intense yesterday and has continued getting worse. My medicine helps a lot but it has started wearing off much quicker than it did on day 1. It's everything I can do to wait for the entire 4 hours before taking it again.

Good luck, buddy. I hope you find some kind of relief!
