I've been growing tomatoes over the last few years, and they ended up sprawling over a 6ft by 6ft area. But I guess the root ball will dictate how big yours get. And the weight of the branches and the hanging fruit... I had to construct a cane pyramid to help plant not to end up just sitting on the soil.

Are those wires gonna stand up to the enventual weight?

I'm waiting for Piggy's to grow before I invest in one.

I bought 2 of them last year. Both plants died. :( The ones in pots on the patio thrived.

My neighbor made his own out of 5 gallon buckets, and his did great!

Will upside down tomatoes fit in right side up salad bowls?

Good luck Piggy, keep us informed.

My neighbor's works fine. Mine refuses to grow anything no matter where i put it. Fortunately, my right-side-up tomatoes and other plants grow just fine.

Here is what ours looks like. It is a beefsteak plant. We've had it about 3 weeks. The key is lots of water and MiracleGro tomatoe fertilizer.

The pot on the right was some herbs. It's gotten too hot here in Florida for them. Now we're just using the pot as a counterbalance for the Topsy Turvey. :-)

i've made my own in the past...

a white plastic hanging planter doesn't stay as hot as a darker one....

cut 1 inch oles in 3 places spread evenly around near the bottom...

place a plastic garbage can liner smoothly around the bowl of the planter...

punch small holes in the plastic liner where the holes in the planter are and push 3 tomato plants roots into the bowl of the planter and fill with potting soil, carefully spreading and covering the roots ...

i'll hang it under the eave of the house where other plants hang, and it gets plenty of light but doesn't overheat like it would in full sun...

you can plant parsley, thyme or some other low height herb in the planter along with the tomatoes.

this setup works really well with cherry or plum tomatoes so it doesn't get too heavy like with full sized tomatoes...

this setup will produce lots of tomatoes and herbs for the whole season

^^ Do you have access to a sunny window? If so, move it inside and hang it there. (Put a bucket beneath it to catch the water.)

I can't wait to see your low hangers, Piglet....

I've seriously thought about trying one of these, but I'm afraid the squirrels would attack them...

But then, my neighbor told me that squirrels don't like tomatoes and they leave them alone...

Beats me... #-o

You can buy that hanger above online, BTW....

Finally, the most successful method of keeping the squirrels away: a good dog. While it's not a good reason to get a dog, you could borrow a friend's dog (if your yard is fenced in - the dog needs to be able to chase the squirrels) and give it a try. Rescue shelters often have programs to take shelter dogs home for the weekend, to give them a break from the shelter. And you never know...you just might fall in love.

Awww..... ;)
