Hi, my name is Kyle, and I’m fresh out of college. Life for me has been a little rough. My family is very religious and dislikes any homosexuals that come into our midst, and you guessed right, I’m gay.
It all started the day of my high school graduation, which happened to fall on my 18th birthday. I was valedictorian of my class; on top of that, I was captain of the baseball team. I decided I would tell my family of my sexual preference at my graduation dinner that night. I got up that morning at 6a.m. to pick up my cap and gown in my school, and then go to my best friend’s house, Justin. Justin is the only person who I told I was gay. He didn’t take it so lightly at first, but soon warmed up to the fact that I am still the same person I was before. He was going to have a couple of friends over, including my ex-girlfriend, whom I had dated to cover up my sexuality, her friends, and a couple more baseball jocks.
I parked my car on the street, for the driveway was full, everyone was here already. I walked up to the door and I could hear laughing, that got me excited to see everyone. I knocked and I heard Justin, “SHH! He’s here, no one say ANYTHING!” he whispered. I wondered what it was. Justin opened the door and greeted me, I walked in to my group of friends staring at me, and whispering in each other’s ear.
“Okay, what’s the secret?” I asked Justin in a playful voice.
“Nothing.” He replied coolly.
“What, no birthday cake?” I said, jokingly.
I walked over to sit next to Mel, the co-captain of the baseball team, and he quickly scooted over so that there was no more room.
“What’s up Mel? Scoot over!” I said, hastily.
“Hell no, you can sit over there!” Mel said pointing towards an empty spot near Ann, my ex-girlfriend’s best friend.
“What the fuck.” I whispered to myself as I walked toward the empty seat.
“Fag.” Somebody whispered.
“WHO SAID THAT?!” I said, surprised. It was quiet. I was ready to knock anyone out.
“I said it, Fag.” Said Mel.
“What the fuck, Justin? YOU TOLD THEM? Fuck you guys,” I said as I stormed out, Justin chasing after me. The others just laughed.
“Come on man, it slipped out. I didn’t mean to say any...” Justin stopped,” Are you crying?
“What the fuck dude, I trusted you with one secret. Shit, now everyone’s going to know.” I was pissed, at him, and at me trusting him... Then, out of nowhere, Justin leaned in and kissed me. “Happy Birthday Kyle,” He whispered…
