Tout m'afflige et me nuit

You are talking about the commonners: but the truth is that Spain ignores even more about Portugal than about France, and the only reason for which Spaniards may appreciate the Portuguese is that they can feel about them like France feels about them... and about the rest of the world.

Spain ignores France - trust me on that one. More than Portugal...nah....but Madrid will NEVER emulate Paris nor has it for over 900 years. But Madrid is an older city. In fact Spain has many deeper histories than France. It will recover in economy while France will not.

It should have read like that.

Madrid was a small Coyoteville sort of hamlet up to the mid-XVIth century. It would make more sense if you had replaced "Madrid" by "Barcelona". Spain does not know a shit about anything (just like any other average country) but it is proverbial how ignorant Spaniards are of Portugal, while you only have to cross a river or simply keep going along the same road, while to get to France to need to go through a whole mountain range or, at any rate, skirt around it: whenever Spaniards have been in deep shit and have felt like looking up to anywhere else, that was France and Paris, you can trust me on that.

In fact, for the rest of Spain, Barcelona had always been a sort of replacement for Paris, just like during the past decade it was so for French or Italian dissatisfied with their lives in their countries (Italians, along with Ecuatorians I think, constitute the bigger foreign community in Barcelona)... but that is another story.
As for the economy, Spain has never had an economy: there is a small, but nevertheless very true element in that whole fairy tale about Catalan independence, to wit, that South of Barcelona and the Basque area (Basque country, Navarre and, to some extent, La Rioja) Spain has been a sort of remnant of old Roman Catholic North Africa. Only very recently a handful of truly globally relevant companies, which is a step behind the Italians' own replacement for a true economy, which has been developing just a couple of globally quite powerful whole industries, with a solid trademark reputation that made pass Italian wine for the pendant to French wine that Spanish wine has actually always been, and a good logistic network (especially through the Italian Americans) that got them to distribute a product that they simply were not able to produce themselves in any way, like when they have been marketing Spanish olive oil for a thoroughly Italian product.

As for France's, for the past three centuries and a half, it has been a mixture of thriving, very innovative, highly competitive, high-quality-product market economy and Stalinist economy.
Spain, like Greece, Portugal and Ireland, have been just the weaker links in a chain (Iceland is just a hanging loose thing up there) that is bound *pun* to end up craking under its own tension. As for America, that mythical corporate America of the post-WWII era, that America of Big Oil, Apple and Microsoft, will dwindle down to a Wal-Mart empire economy (by that not meaning the actual company, but the sort of more trashy local than sohpisticatedly global business model that it represents) in which supposedly sophisticated preppy people dress up like European lower middle class geeks, and imagination, for business like for everything else, can not go much further than what can be found in the Bible, Bacon or Bob Dylan.

I am happy that you are just being facetious, instead of one of those big fuss Mensa pretenders, or a CIA analyst being paid to report what any Spaniard with a working brain and no holds barred knows as a matter of course. Oh, and, as for "deeper histories" you mean something like El caballero de Olmedo, Fuenteovejuna or La vida es sueño?

Saw "Clandestinos" last night...are the ETA still around in Spain bombing places?

Etarreans are still around, but they said, a little over twelve months ago, that they are not bombing any more :rolleyes:

The worse bombs in Spain have always been the intestinal ones coming down from the higher seats of the country.

Well it is good there is a truce. The movie was OK but light on the sex and passion but was more about just being an angry youth and attaching to any cause perhaps even terrorism though ETA is not al quaeda . Spanish economy is in ruins? Telefonica and big companies a disaster! Also Santander Bank right?

Spain economy is a joke... ok, global economy is a joke, but what can you expect of the clownish clumsy fotocopy of a bad joke? There are no enterprises in Spain, there are fiefs... at least that is the general tone outside Catalonia and the Basque area.

The problem with Spain is that the assets and the triumphs of the country are scattered over the lower layer of crap, and depending on their own particular interests, clueless or mischievous foreigners focus on either of those to make it the picture of the whole country.
Anyway, what's the use of having a healthcare system which is cheaper and more efficient than those in Germany or the US, when the political powers use its resources to pretend that thhey are making up for the bad shape of private enterprises and households? What's the use of having educated, clever or generally good people when the only ones running for office are the worse rascals in the country?

Oh well, I had been pointing to all that since I was belamy on JUB, in the 2005-2009 period, and that is why I talked about leaving the country... even if that be just a wishful :rolleyes: :cool:

Spain is the twilight zone in which Western Europe becomes Eastern Europe, so as to close up the European ring of disgraces.

We have the same problem in Australia. We only have b-grade people in parliament. And America seems only to want photogenic people in 'the white house'.

Oh please, they have that problem everywhere: the difference is the degree to which it rules the destiny of a country. The problem is not having that sort of people, but not having anything behind that (supposedly) personable screen masking the capable people doing the necessary good work.
As long as the USA has that legal system and a couple other devices, it does not matter THAT much what rascals and plastic thespian arrivistes like Reagan, Schwarzy or Chuck Norris are pulling the guts of the masses. The problem is not having diarrhea or not, but having the necessary corrective at hand to avoid getting drained and spent by it.

Some places are much worse than Spain, which gives further proof of my point: Spain is in a limbo between hell and whatever is above, if not heaven, and that is also the very reason why it is such a good place for holidays for people in search of a limbo for resting their minds and bodies from the pains of Hell and the dullness of a much sober Heaven.

When Britain and the USA exported democracy, they only exported the rituals and the appearance (the polling, the generally elected head...), but they could not implant the beliefs and habits that give sense to them... since they themselves are not very aware of their own principles: they just act driven by the inertia of the impulse of previous generations, until the day they are not able to give a new impulse to their democratic system, because it had just become a habit even for the ruling class that was supposed to be aware of it and therefore be able to run their countries.

Racination = affliction, injury, and conspiracy

To say nothing of therapy.

Ah, for innocence.

Ratiocination=

Ceux des ambassadeurs, et tous ceux des humains ;
Pour qui ? Pour une ingrate, à qui je le promets ;

Ah, for innocence.

Innocence=

Dans ce coeur expirant jette un froid inconnu ;
Et le ciel, et l'époux que ma présence outrage ;
