When Britain and the USA exported democracy, they only exported the rituals and the appearance (the polling, the generally elected head...), but they could not implant the beliefs and habits that give sense to them... since they themselves are not very aware of their own principles: they just act driven by the inertia of the impulse of previous generations, until the day they are not able to give a new impulse to their democratic system, because it had just become a habit even for the ruling class that was supposed to be aware of it and therefore be able to run their countries.

From what you wrote, it seemed like you had known about Catalonia and the Catalan, but not what that entailed. Just that.
But Spaniards and Catalan people are not taught much about history and geography, not even their own, so do not feel that bad.
