that was long time ago. i just remembered.

one time, i was driving on a small street with no one walking around, it has two stop signs one after another. i stopped, then drove. but the evil cops didn't agree me, they said that i didn't stop completely. they didn't try to stop me at the first stop sign, they let me kept on driving to the second stop sign, then they stopped me.

so instead of paying one stop sign traffic fine, i had to pay double, which was like over hundreds of dollars, i forgot.

so my question is, is it legal for them to do things like that to me? if they seriously want to help, they should have stopped me at the first stop sign, but it seems to me that they just wanted to make money, that is why they didn't stop me at the first sign.

One 'rolling stop' may be a forgivable mistake. Two 'rolling stops' indicates a pattern.

'Stop' means 'stop' - not 'slow down a lot'.

well, it is my word against them. i said that i completely stopped, they said that i didn't stop completely. stupid cops, one time, some cops even gave me a ticket for jaywalking!

cops haven't helped me in any way other than causing me troubles.

Which, surprise surprise, is also against the law.

Sure, it's your word against theirs that you came to a complete, but you have the right to dispute the tickets and take them to court.

i like the way you're knowingly breaking the law and the cops are the stupid ones.

Fight in court, and threaten to sue for emotional anguish.

You won't win, but it'll be fun to watch.

I gave a guy a ticket once for making a left turn against a no left turn sign. The sign was behind a large stone wall and I had passed through that intersection seconds before, so I knew the sign was ther. he made his turn against the sign and I ticketed him. In court during the trial he asked me if I was superman, no I said, can you see through stone walls? no I said, do I have x-ray vision? no I said, then how do you know there was a no left turn sign there? I said I passed it two seconds before you made your illegal turn.

Judge says..GUILTY!

Some cops are dicks. Plain and simple. Some will get you for the rolling stop or doing 32 in the 30 zone, others won't. I just try not to give them any reason to mess with me.

It's smart to mind your p's and q's while the po po be around....

I don't get that at all. I mean, I got a ticket for making a right turn on red despite a "no turn on red" sign. (I simply didn't see it.) The cop pulled me over about two blocks down the road, and told me there was a sign back there. I assumed he knew what he was talking about. What was I going to do - demand he take me back and show me? Say he had to be superhuman to see it from where we were? I'm assuming this wasn't his first time on that street, and if he said there's a sign there, there probably was. (I was on the street two days later, and yes, there was.)

Can you get in trouble for doing a "Chinese Fire Drill" at a stop sign?

If you think the ticket was unfair, contest it. But they were within their legal rights to ticket you twice, traffic stops are one of those places where the police have the right of discretion whether or not to pull you over and cite you. That discretion can work in your favor: I know it worked in mine, when I got pulled over frequently when I was a new driver, and the cop let me off with a warning instead of the ticket I legally deserved.

I think that it will look to a judge that they were willing to let you slide if you did it just the once, but when you did it twice they felt compelled to take punitive action.

And whenever it's your word against the word of a sworn officer of the law...well, I'd probably take the cop's word, too.

all the cops that i have met just want to piss me off. they are all the same.

seriously, that street was secluded, there was no pedestrians. i stopped at both signs, it is just a matter how long I stopped.

by the way, it happened long time ago. I paid the stupid fine which I could have used that money to buy myself a nice stereo system.

Ah. That makes it all right then.

I'm sure it's a conspiracy. Your licence number has been distributed to every police station across the nation and every police officer throughout the country is picking on you just for fun.

Or, you could just have a habit of breaking the law.

(I tend to believe the second option. The first option is a bit of a stretch for me.)

Listen, you had an opportunity to contest the tickets in court, you didn't. You're guilty, so get over it and move on.

Stop means stop. The rest of your argument means very little, I'm afaraid.

This situation makes me think of one I heard before. This guy was driving down the road when he came up to a stop sign. He slowed down and glanced down the cross streets before speeding up and passing through the intersection. A quarter mile down the road he was pulled over and the cop started writing him a ticket. The guy claimed he didn't understand what the problem was so the cop asked him to step out of the vehicle. The cop then pulled out his billy club and started beating the man with it. "Now tell me when you want me to slow down and when you want me to stop," the cop said.

The point is, it doesn't matter if there were pedestrians or not because you get in the habit of slowing through stop signs and you'll do it when they are there as well. That is the point. There are rules of the road for a reason, to protect all of us, and I personally don't appreciate you endangering the rest of us for your own personal whim.

I hear you preppyjock...

I get harassed on an ALMOST daily basis out here -- they CLAIM that it is for public safety -- but in reality it is all about the revenue...

I once got pulled over (years ago) for running a stop sign that I DID STOP FOR (the cop was RIGHT there and I saw him prior to the sign) -- and all they ACTUALLY wanted to do was HARASS me...

They made me do a roadside DUI test (which I passed) and also searched my car -- JUST BECAUSE I was in a BAD part of town in the EARLY morning hours...

They said the ONLY 2 reasons I would be there would be either DRUGS or PROSTITUTES...

The ACTUAL REASON I was there was because there was an accident on I-285 -- and I was cutting through the "hood" to get to work on time...

I SUSPECT that the MAJORITY of cops are actually TRYING to "protect and serve" -- but that MINORITY is SURE HARD to NOT BITCH about...

:(:(:(

^ you know if they don't have probable cause they can't search your car unless you allow them to?
