Trans teen suicide - LeeLah Alcorn

Has anyone either seen this movie or read the book? It's about an overbearing Bible-thumping "Christian" mother who drives her son to suicide - he jumped off an overpass onto busy traffic. Racked with guilt, she was seen speaking out on behalf of LGBT kids. Maybe her penitence was genuine, but to me it looks like too little, too late. The serious wankers weren't going to attend her talks anyway.

I've watched the movie several times. It opened my eyes to a lot of aspects in the life of a gay man.

Yeah well, at least Bobby's mom made atonement for her actions and is giving back to the LGBT community. Leelah Alcorn's parents not only refuse to acknowledge her as a trans woman, but they completely deny that it was a suicide. They keep saying "Oh my son was killed in an car accident, what a horrible tragedy." While there is irrefutable proof in the form of a suicide note on her tumblr.

Leelah's Law needs your help: "There's a petition on the White House website, 'Enact Leelah's Law to Ban All LGBTQ+ Conversion Therapy.' If the petition receives 100,000 signatures within the first 30 days, the White House will respond. Right now, the petition has 67,259 signatures, and needs 32,741 more to qualify by February 2. While it won't guarantee a bill or a law, greater awareness means greater possibility for action."

Leelah Alcorn Remembered as Teen Who Inspired White House Petition to End 'Conversion Therapy'

"The only way I will rest in peace is if one day transgender people aren't treated the way I was [and that] they're treated like humans with valid feelings and human rights."

That line is from a suicide note Ohio teen Leelah Alcorn wrote on Tumblr in December shortly before she stepped in front of a tractor-trailer and died in a Cincinnati suburb.

Alcorn, 17, explained in the note that she was taken to Christian therapists by her mom, Carla, who, she said, "reacted extremely negatively" when Alcorn told her she was transgender.

The note and Alcorn's tragic death quickly spurred a formal petition to the White House to "ban all "LGBT+ conversion therapy." President Obama and the White House responded Wednesday night, supporting the petition but noted a national ban would "require congressional action."

Transgender teen in California kills self after bullying

Taylor Alesana was constantly picked on by peers before taking her life last week, the North County LGBTQ Resource Center said.

"With few adults to turn to, and with no support from her school, her life became too difficult," the group said. "Taylor was a beautiful and courageous girl, and all she wanted was acceptance."
Apparently, this was too much to ask. :(

So sad...every day mankind gets worse and worse. There's no compassion anymore

All these stories about young gay men and women taking their lives just breaks my heart. RIP.

A sad movie well done.

I remember, about two years before its release, accidentally stumbling onto one of the (outdoors) movie sets at 1 in the morning. I stopped one of the people and asked if this was a movie, and I knew I had to see it when it was described to me. It could have just as easily been the set for some movie I would likely not care about at all, such as a mystery. But, I knew I HAD to see it - thankfully the title was already in place and I wasn't given a "working title" that would change later.

It was the filming in Royal Oak, Michigan that I stumbled onto. It's hard to believe, but the railroad tracks scene (where the tracks go far ahead into the distance) goes directly through the downtown of a suburb of 100,000 people.

The Leelah Alcorn Memorial Highway Honors The Transgender Teen & Reminds Us Of What We Can & Need To Do To Support The Trans Community

Last December, transgender teen Leelah Alcorn, 17, died by suicide on Interstate 71 right outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. Now, nearly a year after her death, Chris Fortin, a 33-year-old gay man and trans ally, has named the stretch of Interstate 71 where Alcorn died the Leelah Alcorn Memorial Highway. Touched by her story of alienation from her family and her experiences with "conversion therapy," Fortin wanted to ensure the citizens of Cincinnati and the entire world did not forget her story. He filed some paperwork to adopt that section of highway, and the rest was history.

Guest Post: Leelah Alcorn Highway Project

When Chris Fortin noticed a paper sign serving as a memorial for Leelah Alcorn, he knew it wouldn’t last. It’s not legal to put signs like that along the highway. But what is legal? Adopting a highway in Leelah’s name. And that’s just what he did.

Note: in order to keep the sign up, Chris needs to organize a volunteer clean-up 4 times a year. He is in need of volunteers. Contact him via email (leelahhighway@gmail.com) or by phone at 513-268-6126.

My name is Chris and I graduated from Kings High School in 2001.

My life was changed December 2014. I remember the day that Leelah Alcorn died by suicide on a highway just minutes from where I grew up. I was saddened that something like this had to happen for transgender issues to be brought into the spotlight. I wanted to ask you something. Maybe you could get involved with my project?

Here’s what do we do
