Travel Nightmare

When this story first broke yesterday, people were asking why Heathrow relied on one source for it's power. Then it emerged that there are various back up systems, but they didn't kick in automatically and everything had to be powered down before it could be powered back up again. They had le grand fromage from the airport on TV last night saying that, in the circumstances, they were doing a good job getting things back up and running. Why couldn't they just throw a switch and carry on? Well, everything had to be tested afterwards to make sure it was working properly blah blah blah. The immediate cause of the problem was the fire, the reason it took so long to resolve was due largely to, yes, you've guessed it, health and safety.

Also, because the power station fire took the entire area out they had to find capacity from elsewhere for the whole area.
Apparently the airport has backup systems to power auxiliary services but it isn't enough to run everything.
And as you say, computer systems don't just reboot like a home PC

This is amazing! The regional power service, Puget Sound Energy (PSE), proposed to the State Utility Rate Commission a plan to provide Seattle/Tacoma airport with "smart grid" computerized redundant power supplies as a defense against a single terrorist attack crippling the state's largest airport. A great idea until the cost of the plan would cause utility rates to skyrocket to the cost of a second home mortgage for all the rate payers across the region.

Heathrow's recovery is actually amazing, especially in light the variety and complexity of the equipment needed in a modern airport.

Once they had power back it was 'only' a question of having all the various computer systems rebooting. It isn't straightforward because they have to be rebooted in sequence because one system triggers the next etc.

On the plus side, now all major airports can learn from the fail, just like they do when aircraft fail.

As for Seattle balking at the cost, that is why federal spending should go up, not down. Washingtton State is not the one who should bear all the costs, but the federal government. It is in the interest of the nation to have airports that are crisis-hardened.

Our problem is not that our government spends too little, but our legislature taxes too corruptly. The rich have vast amounts far in excess of need. They earned their money FROM this economy, FROM these taxpayers, FROM this government's (former) stability. Shielding their earnings is just self-destructive, and we're seeing the fruits of that folly today.

Heathrow's debacle wasn't followed by an idiot PM making accusations and attacking administrators and the opposition party for points, nor releases on TWITter or (anti)Truth (anti)Social.

It's pretty much hell when your ally's airport fire crisis is something to be envied.

What a shame that emergency/crisis planning for infrastructure is not handled as a shared responsibility. Eventually, all the needed upgrades will happen - circumstances will force it.

I think it just depends on what set asides have been provided.

Surely some of the infrastructure bill would be allowed to be spent on it, assuming Congress still controls funding.

I think in this day any set asides when it comes to energy will soon be inadequate.
Some old scientist said that nature will always fill a vacuum. The same applies to energy and roads! No sooner are extra lanes built on motorways (freeways) than they are full and inadequate

The Operations team leader for McChord Air Force Base (WA) said in an interview that Base operations are powered by layers of backup power supplies and the main power grid randomly shifts to emergency power to "exercise" all tier-levels of electrical power instead of waiting for a real emergency to reveal any weak-links in planned backup systems.

Betcha the lights around the Base flicker whenever the grid computer trips into emergency testing mode.

The report is out. It appears that the fire was probably caused by "moisture entering the bushing causing a short circuit". The report says that the issues were first detected seven yours ago but not addressed, that the controls in place were "not effective and failed to identify subsequently that action had not been taken" and that in 2022 it was decided to "defer basic maintenance".
