Hello everyone,

So lately I've heard the term "troll" being tossed around by other members with regards to the conduct and behavior of a few, particularly annoying, individuals. What does this mean?! Haha. I'm so confused--I was under the impression "trolling" was simply reading forums but never posting. I'm actually new to online forums--this being one of my first--and I'm just not versed in the proper way to conduct oneself when interacting with a troll Please help! Perhaps this thread can serve as sort of "Spotting and Conversing with Trolls for Dummies." Thank you in advance. ^.^

Trolls post with the intention of inciting 'loud' discussion. Their sole purpose is to cause problems and disrupt the general flow of things.

If you get the feeling that someone is trying to force you into an argument, you're being challenged by a troll.

The best way to deal with them is to ignore them. (If you're tangled up with one, walk away. He will think of himself as the victor, but everyone else will know that he's the loser.)

Lurking is when one reads only and seldom posts.

Trolling is when someone intentionally is being a douche, or making a scene.

Not to be confused with having a contrary opinion, and also not to be confused with being unintentionally misunderstood.

a troll is the internet equivalent of an attention-whore. they wear neon-pink pleather pants, they make threads about divisive topics in a confrontational and unsophisticated manner - any form of attention will do.

Sometimes it's fun to play with trolls when they aren't able to rile you into an argument. It's interesting to witness the lengths they will go to in order to prove themselves right.

As in a lot of things Youtube shows the way

Well, I was bored so I decided to read through the court transcripts of the trial against that guy who put Sarah Palin's personal email on 4chan. Of course anon took it and the trolls had a field day. Anyways, moot, who is essentially a) a complete sexy babe and b) founder of 4chan and a God to nerds said when the court asked that trolls are "trouble makers".

They are essentially people that will make a post to get a response out of someone. Or the egg people on. There are some notorious trolls on JUB, especially on CE & P.
Some easy ways to spot a troll are: sweeping, biased, unsubstantiated statements or obvious inflammatory posts.
If you see a troll, don't "feed the troll" i.e. respond, thats how they survive.

Anyways, a great example of a troll is the "Shit was SO cash" meme. The person who posts it isn't "John" but he is actually a troll, hoping to piss someone off with the arrogant post. Just look it up on google and it will give you a good idea of what a troll is. :)

I hate being gay! You lot are just a bunch of crazy deviants who are deniers of the Lord our God! You seriously need to get into therapy! ALL OF YOU!

And I hate black people! They frighten me! I never want to see another of them in my life! They're all drug-dealers and murderers! Who needs them around! They're useless!

What do all of you have to say about that, then?

^ Trollspeak.

(I assume you all know me well enough to know that was a joke, albeit a slightly tasteless one) :)

Trolling is the deliberate posting of outrageous, shocking and offensive comments to provoke a reaction by as many people as possible, because the troll wants attention above all else, even if it's scornful attention.

Yep, thats what i think "trolling" mean and still is. :)

Actually a troll is none of these things. If you go into a bar, and an unattractive person tries to buy you a drink, he is a troll.

Thank you, everyone! ^.^

I think I get the "troll" concept now--or, at the very least, have a better understanding.

You're all so lovely. Thank you. ^.^

If you don't agree with my post, you are a troll.
