But when someone answers a question with a disparaging lie, the person who was libeled is the real victim. And simple common sense dictates the liar is literally begging for trouble from that victim, including being labeled a troll.

We don't always know immediately, but we begin to catch on when somebody posts nonsense posts and threads with the intent to start an argument. Over time, we begin to recognise the signs.

Often they will post controversial threads (or turn innocent threads into controversial ones) and then demand that we post proof of our responses. When we do, it's ignored and the same old nonsense proof is posted time and time again in rebuttal.

Trolls were something different in back in the day... I knew them as OLD guys who would prey on young 'twinks'. When did the term change to what it is now?

I think it's both. I think online troll has the online meaning and offline it's likely to have the meaning that you meant. Although I find that the "old" part is subjective.

Modern definition of "troll" is anyone who intentionally seeks out to cause trouble and/or to piss people off for attention. A LOT of people who are feeling depressed, suffering from social anxiety etc will go on message boards or comment sections of sites to stir up shit.
