Although the most outrageous offense in the released audio is the assault aspect, the mere usage in a coarse way of the vulgarities is pretty strong in the main. Nixon's use of the F bomb on the Whitehouse tapes would have been strong poison had he been a candidate and not already president.
Whereas people do not expect a leader to be a paragon realistically, the facade still has to be maintained. This was too far beyond the limit. He's toast, toast, toast. The religious right was already going to have to hold its nose to make their anti-Hillary vote through him, but now they are literally unable. That's huge. This isn't Jimmy Swaggart and the Assembly of God. There won't be any forgiveness for him. Subtract the majority of moderate Republicans, Baptists, Pentecostals, observing Catholics, and Mormons, and the GOP loses.
I pose a new question. As Matt and others correctly pointed out, this timing is all wrong to have come from Democrats. I am not a conspiracy theorist, but I believe this came from the Right. Knock your loser leader off the ticket, and then promote your golden boy who just proved himself in the VP debate. Maybe slip in the Speaker as the new VP candidate.
People have not given enough attention to how many of the GOP leaders despise Trump and how much power they wield. It is not called a political machine for nothing. The wheels are turning.
As others have reminded us, the SCOTUS angle is huge and enduring. I have to believe this is Plan C by the GOP. It was pulled out now because Trump didn't self-destruct on his own, and there is yet time to allow a sharp swerve at the end. The continuing unpopularity of Hillary made this option a possibility. She hasn't crushed him as she should have been able to do by now. This game changer bodes ill for progressives.
I will go on record to say now that it will bring him down. I think he's getting an ultimatum from Pence and others right now. We are in the Kissinger hours. The end is near.
Be careful of the DNP having to now counter a party that crucified its messiah. They will be much harder to beat with a non-Trump candidate and a party revived. There will be a big push to steal the young vote too.
